MUNISING — Make it five in a row for the Jeffers boys.
The Jets set a school record for the most consecutive Upper Peninsula cross country titles, taking top honors in Division 2 for the fifth straight time with 23 points. They were followed by Rudyard 51 and Munising 117.
“On the first day of practice, we talked about it and the biggest accomplishment is all seven boys and both girls medalled,” Jeffers coach Sam Kilpela said. “It ended up being a great day. This speaks volumes for our program. Overall, we stayed healthy and on the last day they finished the job. This is the first time in our school history we won it five years in a row.”

It warmed up quickly today and I think it caught everybody off guard. He had quite a few colder races. The temperature had been in the 50s nearly everyday. The Marquette guys were definitely pushing me throughout the race. I used a lot of the same strategy as last year. I followed a conservative approach in the first mile, then I took off.”
Senior Ben Hemmer was Houghton’s leader in seventh (17:27.8) and sophomore Brandon Van Karsen placed ninth (17:40.7).
“It warmed up quickly,” Hemmer said. “It got hot out there, but everything went all right. We were running for our coach. I’m just grateful for cross country. I’m really happy with my season. ”
The Gremlins wore pink on their uniforms in honor of Cancer Awareness Month and their coach Traci Welch, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer.
“I had no idea they were doing the new uniforms,” she said. “They really surprised me. The prognosis is good right now. I felt I dealt with chemo better than most people. I’m about to start radiation, but I’d rather be with them. This helps me get through it.”
