LAKE LINDEN — There is a reason that the Gogebic Miners football team is now 7-0 on the season. It was evident at Ron Warner Field in Lake Linden on Saturday as they defeated the Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes (5-2) 42-12 in eight-man football.

“That (Gogebic) is a good football team,” said Lakes coach Brett Gervais. “They played a complete football game on both sides of the ball. They scored right off the bat, ran the ball well, and controlled clock.”

The Miners scored four times in the first half and blanked the Lakes.

At the 6:45 mark, Gogebic’s quarterback Jayden Verrett scored a touchdown with a 56-yard run. The two-point conversion was good and the Miners led 8-0 at the end of one.

Verrett had two big pass plays in the second quarter that led to touchdowns. At the six-minute mark he hit Aiden Partanen for a 14-yard pass in the endzone. Four minutes later, he connected with Cayden Harju for a 49-yard play that resulted in another six for the Miners. Teammate Cory Aspinwall found daylight for a 40-yard touchdown run with less than two minutes to go in the half, and the Miners led 30-0 at the midway point.

“At half I told the guys not to hit the panic button,” Gervais added. “When you are down 30-0 at half, it is pretty easy to put your head down and pack it up. I told them to try and chip away and be there for each other.”

In terms of points, the Lakes and the Miners tied for the second half with 12 apiece. The Lakes scored their 12 in the third quarter.

Their first touchdown came at the 8:30 mark when quarterback Brady Axford hit his brother Lukas for a 16-yard touchdown pass.

Brady Axford threw for 137 yards on the afternoon with his second touchdown pass coming at the end of the third. That score capped a 46-yard drive that ended with an end zone pass to Tyler Axford. Tyler had seven receptions and led the team with 69 yards in the game.

In between the Lakes’ touchdowns, the Miners kept going with their fifth score. They led 36-12 at the end of three. They had the final say in the fourth quarter with a Aspinwall scoring again on a short red-zone run. This one ended 42-12.

“Not all is lost on this one,” Gervais added. “We need to pick ourselves up and learn from our mistakes.”
