LAKE LINDEN — What a difference a week makes on the gridiron for the Lake Linden- Hubbell Lakes. A week ago, the Lakes were on the receiving end of a lopsided loss (42-12) to the Gogebic Miners. On Saturday, the dished out a 64-28 lopsided loss to the Ironwood Red Devils.

In the eyes of Lakes coach Brett Gervais, it all started with a good week of practice.

“Coming off that homecoming loss last week, it was good to see the guys step up and respond,” he said.

He added that he liked the quick start by his team. It was a 14-0 lead after one.

This included an Ashton Sullivan and a Josh Daavettila touchdown all before the five-minute mark of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Lakes added 30 more points. This included big touchdown runs of more than 40 yards by Brady Axford and Daavettila. Teammate Tyler Axford posted a 52-yard pass play and Daavettila added 56 more yards to his impressive 225 total rushing yards with his third TD of the afternoon.

The Red Devils scored twice in the second with Nick Miskovich punching in two short-yard touchdown runs.

The Lakes led 44-14 at half.

“We made some small adjustments at halftime and that worked out well,” noted Gervais. Among them was working Lukas Axford in as a defensive back. It was a new assignment for him, and he did well.”

In the third, scores by Sullivan and Daavettila made it a 58-14 Lakes lead.

The Red Devils posted eight to get to 58-22, but a running clock was in place to start the fourth, making a comeback even tougher to complete.

Tobin Baril added the icing of the cake for the Lakes with an 80-yard run for six with around two minutes to go in the game. The Red Devils added another six and this one ended 64-28.

Quarterback Brady Axford was three for five in his passing. He was three for five in passing and threw for 67 yards. He had 54 yards running on the ground and two two-point conversions.

This was the Lakes last home game of the season. With that they saluted their senior players with Parent’s Day. Among those graduating are: Deacon Novak, Nick Heinz, Travis Holbrook and Isaac Johnson.

“Hats off to the seniors,” said Gervais. “I am very proud of them. They get the game ball.”
