L’ANSE — After nine losses in a row, the L’Anse Purple Hornets volleyball team finally put a win together on the court on Monday. They swept the visiting Bessemer Speedgirls, 3-0 (25-18, 25-12 and 25-23).
“We have been working on staying focused on what we need to do on the court, and that all seemed to come together tonight,” said Purple Hornets coach McKenna Monticello. “I liked how we moved the ball around the court tonight.”
That good ball movement started early on in the first set with a Purple Hornets lead. It became a six-point advantage courtesy of L’Anse’s Dalanna Conner. She served up one of her six aces off of 11 serves for point 21.
She didn’t stop there but rather posted four more points for the set win.
The second set was much the same. The Purple Hornets jumped out to a 9-7 lead. With Kwynn Voskuhl at the line, it morphed into a 15-8 lead.
Meanwhile, the Speedgirls struggled to put points on the board. They were one and done when they had the ball.
“We have a hard time going on runs with our points,” said Speedgirls coach Emily DiGiorgio. “We were flat. It was like it took us two sets to warm up.”
After Conner posted another run of five from the service line, the Purple Hornets went up 2-0 and put themselves within striking distance of winning the match.
The third set was Bessemer’s best. After ties at three and five, the Speedgirls led by as many as five at 11-6 and 13-8, courtesy of the strong service of Marissa Renaud. While L’Anse got within one at 17-18, it wasn’t until Voskuhl stepped up to the line when the Purple Hornets took the lead. They tied at 22 and at 23 before winning at 25-23.
“Aaliyah and Danni Dantes both played incredible,” Monticello added. “I am proud of both of them.”
