HOUGHTON — Michigan Tech Huskies junior Tess Hayes has been named the GLIAC Setter of the Week.

“We wanted to go with Tess (Friday) because of the seniority,” said Huskies coach Cindy Pindral. “She’s played in front of the Pep Band before.”

Hayes led Tech to a weekend sweep at the SDC Gym, setting the offense with 74 assists and averaging 10.57 per set.

“We wanted to go with Tess (Friday) because of the seniority,” said Pindral. “She’s played in front of the Pep Band before.”

The junior setter added 16 digs, four aces, three kills, and three block assists in the two matches.

“It’s kind of a toss up between Tess and (Madelynn) Kreider, and I mean that in the best way,” said Pindral. “They support each other so well. They are excellent setters in their own right, and there’s not too, too much of a difference when you throw them in, so that’s a luxury, for sure.

“But, at the same time, both of them deserve playing time. So it’s really tough on us as coaches to make sure that they’re both getting looks, but both of them have handled the setter switching very professionally, and I really appreciate them kind of tag-teaming that position.”

Hayes tallied 35 assists and eight digs in a sweep of Roosevelt on Friday and 39 assists and eight digs in a 3-1 victory over Parkside on Saturday. Hayes ranks eighth in the GLIAC in assists per set (7.74).
