Great Lakes Conference announces football awards

LAKE LINDEN — The Great Lakes Conference announced their football awards last week. The North Central Jets were named the Team of the Year. Gogebic’s Nick Heikkila was named Coach of the Year, and Jayden Verrett won Offensive Player of the Year.

Lake Linden-Hubbell’s Josh Daavettila, a junior, was named Defensive Player of the Year.

The First Team Offense saw Lake Linden junior Tyler Axford named as a hybrid player. Ontonagon’s Ryan Holmstrom, a junior, was named as an offensive lineman.

Joining them were North Central quarterback Ben Stage, Crystal Falls Forest Park running back Trent Kannich and Gogebic running back Leland Hollenbeck, Ironwood wide receiver Nick Miskovich and North Central wide receiver Kaden Malone, North Central offensive lineman Drayden Preaseau and Gogebic offensive lineman Patrick Hokans.

On the Second Team, Lake Linden-Hubbell junior Brady Axford was named as quarterback. He was joined by Daavettila at running back, and senior Travis Holbook at offensive lineman.

Ontonagon senior Jack Nelson was named as a wide receiver, and sophomore Brady Bobula was named as hybrid.

They were joined by Gogebic running back Cory Aspinwall, North Central wide receiver Riley Cretens, Gogebic offensive lineman Henry Steiger and Ironwood offensive lineman Madden Sommer.

On the Defensive First Team, Brady Axford was named as a defensive back. Ontonagon defensive back Dyceson Drew, a senior, was also named.

Joining them were Hollenbeck as a linebacker, North Central linebacker Cooper Raab, Gogebic defensive back Cayden Harju, North Central hybrid Prayer Lobonte, North Central defensive lineman Myles Nehring, Gogebic defensive lineman Matthew Switzer, and Sommer as a defensive lineman.

Tyler Axford was named to the Defensive Second Team as a linebacker. Bobula was named as a hybrid and was joined by teammates Holmstrom and Nelson as defensive linemen.

Also named were Kannich as a linebacker, Gogebic defensive back Aiden Partanen, Verrett, Ironwood defensive back Eli Ruotsaula, Gogebic hybrid Henry Jenkins, and North Central defensive lineman Brody Mercier.

On Special Teams, Hollebeck was named as kicker, Mercier was named as punter, and Brady Axford was named as return specialist.

Lake Linden junior Lukas Axford earned honorable mention, as did Ontonagon sophomore B.J. Anderson.

Also given honorable mention were Forest Park’s James Smith, Gogebic’s Own Mijevich, Ironwood’s Brendon McCulloch, and North Central’s Jaxson Preseau.
