Huskies hockey earns split in New York

With a shutout Saturday night over St. Lawrence, the Michigan Tech Huskies hockey team earned a split during their trip to northern New York. They dropped a game to Clarkson on Friday, 6-4, but bounced back with a 3-0 win over the Saints.

With the split, the Huskies are now 5-3 on the season and 2-0 in CCHA play.

Huskies shutout St. Lawrence in New York

CANTON, NY — The Huskies shutout the Saints Saturday at Appleton Arena. Captain Isaac Gordon, alternate captain Max Koskipirtti, and freshman defenseman Kalem Parker scored the goals, and junior goaltender Owen Bartoszkiewicz earned the shutout with 28 saves.

“I’m super proud of the bounce back tonight,” Huskies coach Bill Muckalt said. “We challenged our team today, and they responded with a commitment to team defense. Our penalty kill was great, and you could just feel the urgency within the group. We weren’t going to be denied tonight.”

Gordon opened scoring with his second of the season only 4:06 into the game. Freshman forward Teydon Trembecky carried the puck across the zone and sent a centering feed to Gordon. Sophomore defenseman Rylan Brown also assisted on Gordon’s 27th career goal.

The teams went scoreless for the next 47 minutes before Koskipirtti added to the lead 12:14 into the third period when he jammed in a centering feed from senior forward Stiven Sardarian. Sophomore defenseman Tyler Miller had the second assist on Koskipirtti’s fourth goal of the season and the 15th of his career.

The Saints pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker, and Parker flipped a puck from the defensive zone and into the empty net for the final tally with 25 seconds left in the game. It was Parker’s second goal of the season. Koskipirtti was credited with an assist.

Bartoszkiewicz made five saves in the first period and 12 in each of the final two periods for his first shutout as a Husky and the third of his collegiate career. He is now 5-2-0 on the season and has 16 NCAA wins.

For the second time this season, the Huskies went without a power play. They were perfect on the penalty kill, going 4-for-4.

The Huskies won over 59 percent of their faceoffs with all four centermen winning at least eight draws.

Huskies fall at Clarkson Friday

POTSDAM, NY — The Huskies fell Friday at Clarkson. Trembecky scored twice for the Huskies, but the Golden Knights scored four straight goals to take control.

“When you give up five even-strength goals, you’re not going to win very many games,” Muckalt said. “We had an excellent first period and held a 3-1 lead in the second. We made some poor decisions, and they capitalized on them. Credit them. We had some looks in the third but couldn’t find the back of the net.”

The Huskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Sophomore forward Elias Jansson scored his first goal of the season 7:20 into the game when he cleaned up a rebound out front for his 13th career goal. Sophomore forward Carson Latimer and alternate captain Joe Prouty assisted.

Freshman forward Brayden Boehm added to the lead less than 3:00 later when he banged in a rebound for his second goal of the season. Latimer took the initial shot with Jansson also assisting.

Clarkson cut into the lead with 66 seconds left in the first period when Jared Mangan scored from Erik Bargholtz.

Michigan Tech regained its two-goal lead 11:39 into the second when Trembecky scored on a quick faceoff play. Freshman center Michael Cicek won the offensive zone draw to Gordon for a one-touch pass to Trembecky.

The Golden Knights took over from there. Shawn O’Donnell made it a one-goal game 1:58 later with a goal from Bryce Sookro and Mael St-denis.

Owen Van Steensel tied the game at 16:53 from Ryan Bottrill and Matthew Mayich.

Van Steensel added a power-play goal 10:29 into the third to give the home team the lead. Tate Taylor and Jared Mangan assisted.

Justin Cote scored 4:02 later for a two-goal lead for Clarkson. Sookro and O’Donnell were credited with the assists.

Trembecky scored his second of the night and team-leading fifth of the season to make it a one-goal game with 3:42 left. On the power play, Sardarian set up the goal with freshman defenseman Reid Andresen adding the second assist.

Michigan Tech added the extra attacker but was called for a late penalty and only generated one shot on goal. Bargholtz sealed the win with an empty-net goal in the final second.

Clarkson led in shots 31-28. Tech was 1-for-2 on the power play and 2-for-4 on the penalty kill.
