Roundup: Copper Kings, Gremlins split, Jets, Bulldogs win as local teams battle downstate rivals

CALUMET — The Calumet Copper Kings hockey team earned a split last weekend by beating Novi Friday before falling to Howell Saturday, both games at the Calumet Colosseum.
In the win against the Wildcats, the Copper Kings scored twice in the first and twice more in the second to put the game out of reach.
Captain Erik Loukus got Calumet on the board with a goal 9:53 into the opening frame. The power play tally was assisted by Nathan Londo and Luke Hamlin.
Londo then extended the lead to 2-0 with just 3:12 remaining in the period. Loukus and Ben Anderson both earned assists on the goal.
In the second period, Hamlin made it 3-0 on another Copper Kings power play 5:40 in. Loukus and Anderson both chipped in to help with the goal.
Loukus then struck for the second time at 8:00. Anderson and Londo both picked up helpers on the play.
Novi broke up Beau Jukuri’s shutout bid on the power play with 5:39 left in the second period.
In the third, Anderson scored his first goal of the season to put the game out of reach with 3:29 left. Hamlin and Londo both assisted on the goal.
Saturday, the Highlanders broke the game open in the second period with three goals en route to a 4-0 win over the Copper Kings.
Dylan Flamini scored twice, sandwiched around a power play goal by Marco Wolf to put the Highlanders up 3-0 after two.
Chad Pietila scored in the third with 7:19 left in the game to seal the win.
Jukuri made 30 saves in the loss.
Bulldogs hold off Trojans
HANCOCK — The Hancock Bulldogs hockey team led 2-1 after two periods, then traded goals throughout the third to come away with a 5-4 win over the Traverse City Central Trojans Friday at the HoCo Arena.
Lukas Axford scored his second goal of the season to get Hancock on the board first with just 20 seconds left in the first period. Brady Axford and Forrest LaCourt assisted on the goal.
After Drew Davison tied it for the Trojans in the second, Luciano Paoli scored his second of the year to give Hancock back the lead with 6:07 left in the frame. Ben Keranen picked up the lone assist.
Nolan Hanner and Paoli scored back-to-back power play goals to put the Bulldogs up 4-1 less than two minutes apart. For Hanner, the goal was his third of the year.
Tyler Axford assisted on Hanner’s goal. Kirby Storm and Connor Helminen both picked up assists on Paoli’s tally.
Davison scored his second of the game and Caden Rodenroth scored on the power play to pull the Trojans back within one, 4-3.
LaCourt put the game out of reach with just two minutes remaining when he scored his first of the season. Tyler Axford earned an assist on the play.
Graham Peters closed out the scoring for the Trojans on the power play with 18 seconds left.
Adam Mikkola made 16 saves to earn the win.
Jets outscore Wildcats
HOUGHTON — The Jeffers Jets scored four times in the second period and then two more in the third to win 6-2 over Novi Saturday at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 6:05 of the second period on two goals by Brady Chippa.
Easton Therrian scored his third goal of the season to get the Jets on the board just 10 seconds after Chippa’s second goal of the game. Max Nordstrom picked up the lone assist.
Captain Brogan Turner followed that up with a goal just six seconds after that to even things at 2-2. Blake Heltunen and Nordstrom earned the assists.
Nordstrom then scored his second goal of the season at 11:00 to put Jeffers ahead for the remainder of the game. Tage Rajala assisted on the goal.
Then, on the power play, Carson L’Esperance scored with 26 seconds left in the period to put the Jets up by two, 4-2. Cameron Anderson and Reese Laitala both earned assists.
L’Esperance struck again just 57 seconds in the third period while the Jets were on the power play. Rajala and Laitala earned assists.
Turner then closed out the scoring with his second of the game with 2:29 left when he scored an unassisted goal.
Kasen Helminen made 20 saves to earn the win.
Gremlins fall to Howell, top Traverse City Central
HOUGHTON — Howell scored twice in the first, three times in the second and once in the third to top the Houghton Gremlins hockey team, 6-0, Friday at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
Luke Storm and Marco Wolf struck in the first to give Howell an early 2-0 lead. Storm’s goal came just 14 seconds in.
Lincoln Frantti struck twice in the middle period, and Wolf scored his second of the game as well, this time on the power play, as the Highlanders led 5-0 after two.
Wolf completed the hat trick 1:19 into the third, on the power play, to seal the win.
Brycyn Nettell made 20 saves in the loss for the Gremlins.
Saturday, the Gremlins struck twice in the first period and four times in the third to seal a 6-0 win over Traverse City Central at Dee Stadium.
Jack Sayen scored his first goal of the season just 3:48 into the game to get Houghton on the board. Mason Soli and Wesley Mattila both earned assists.
Braden Kari then struck on the power play with 2:10 left in the period to put the Gremlins up 2-0. The goal was his second of the year. Soli and Calvin Rinkinen both picked up assists on the goal.
Connor Arko scored the first of his two goals 7:22 into the third period. Ian Hembroff earned an assist on the goal. Arko’s second goal came on the power play with 3:40 left. Sayen and Noah Maillette both assisted on the goal.
Maillette scored his first goal of the season at 8:32. Gage Gullstrand earned an assist on the tally. He then scored again on the power play with 4:51 remaining. Sayen and Brody Donnelly picked up assists on the goal.
Cooper Flachs stopped all 15 shots sent his way for the shutout and the win.
