Copper Kings hockey shuts out Jets Tuesday

CALUMET — With five goals in the first period and two more in the second, the Calumet Copper Kings hockey team needed just one goal in the third to earn a mercy rule win over the Jeffers Jets Tuesday at the Calumet Colosseum.

With the win, the Copper Kings improved to 4-2-1 on the season, while the Jets fell to 7-2.

Nathan Londo drove the Copper Kings’ offense with a hat trick in the first period. He started things off just 7:08 into the game with his fourth of the year. Dylan Crouch and Drake Niemala assisted on the goal.

He struck again 3:20 later. This time Lewis Nagel and Ben Anderson earned assists. His third came with 3:38 remaining in the opening frame. Anderson and Erik Loukus earned assists on the goal.

Oskar Loukus, who also scored a hat trick, broke up Londo’s bid for a natural hat trick with a goal at 12:11. Niemala and Robert Loukus assisted.

Oskar Loukus’ second goal came with 5:05 left in the second period. This time Luke Hamlin and Robert Loukus earned the assists. His third goal came with 5:17 left in the game to seal the win. Nagel and Robert Loukus both earned assists.

Erik Loukus scored the other two Copper Kings’ goals. The first came on the power play with 24 seconds left in the first period. Niemala and Anderson both were credited with assists.

His second came at 10:23 of the second period, and again was on the power play. Niemala and Hamlin both picked up assists.

Beau Jukuri stopped all nine shots he saw to earn the shutout and the win. Kasen Helminen was replaced to start the second period for the Jets with Pierce Johnson. Helminen stopped 14 of 19 in the first period for the Jets. Johnson stopped 11 over the final two periods.

The Jets are back in action Friday when they travel to Gaylord to take on Dearborn Divine Child. Calumet is also in action Friday, hosting Houghton at 7 p.m.
