HOUGHTON — At the end of the first quarter in Monday night’s matchup between the Houghton Gremlins and the Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes boys basketball teams, the Gremlins led 29-12.
Sophomore sharp shooter Terrence Nolan was behind 25 of those points for Houghton. Even more impressive is the fact that 21 of his points were 3-pointers. He hit seven of them, tying a MHSAA record for most in a quarter by a player.
Nolan went on to sink 10 total 3-pointers. That also matched a state record for most in a high school game. He ended the game with 43 points in the Gremlins’ 86-31 win over the Lakes. His 10 triples set a new Houghton High School record. The previous record was nine.
“He (Nolan) earned it,” said Gremlins coach Jared Lawson. “Terry is the first one here in the morning, and stays after practice shooting. The kid lives in the gym. His dedication to the game is certainly an example to our other kids.”
The Gremlins outscored the Lakes 22-6 in the second and led 48-18 at half.
“I liked our ball movement,” said Lawson. “We are doing an outstanding job of moving the ball to the right location and the right guy. We have guys who are not afraid to shoot.”
The third quarter was much the same with the running clock going into effect at 64-24 – just under halfway through. Both coaches played their benches for the final seven minutes. The Gremlins won the fourth, 15-5.
Joining Nolan in double figures was Jack Cooke with 10. He and teammate Henry Lounibos received accolades from their coach.
“Jack and Henry are excellent on defense,” Lawson said. “Our defense is much farther along this season than I expected and that is because they are leading it. They are up front with their intensity and hustle.”
Josh Daavettila led the Lakes in scoring with 16.
