Pioneers spread offense around in win over Wolverines
HOUGHTON — The Portage Lake Pioneers hockey team scored five times Saturday in a 5-2 win over the Calumet Copper Kings at Dee Stadium. All five Pioneers goals were scored by a different player in the win.
The Pioneers led just 1:56 into the game when defenseman Riley McKay found the net. Forwards Spencer Donnelly and Brett Hauswirth both assisted on the goal.
Calumet scored the game’s next two goals. Forward Austin Rilei scored the first one at 6:10, with forward Mikko Karstu earning the lone assist. Then forward Sherman Mowery scored just 21 seconds later off a feed from forward Dylan Boberg.
Pioneers forward Austin Mikesch evened things at 13:45 when he buried a puck past Calumet goaltender Tyler Hubbard. Forwards Landon Stevens and Alec Broetzman both assisted on the tally.
In the middle period, Broetzman scored the lone goal for either team when he found the net at 9:33. Stevens picked up the lone assist.
Hauswirth extended Portage Lake’s lead just 1:59 into the third. Forward Conner Raffaelli had the assist on the goal.
Forward Dominick Nettell capped the scoring just over two minutes later at 4:14. Forward Wyatt Geshel earned an assist
Goaltender Camden Burggrabe made 23 saves to earn the win for Portage Lake. Tyler Hubbard stopped 54 for Calumet.
