Bulldogs hockey earns a pair of wins

HANCOCK — Senior goaltender Brian Ponnikas stopped all nine shots sent his way as the Hancock Bulldogs hockey rolled to a 9-0 victory over the visiting Waukesha Wings Friday at the HoCo Arena.

All three of the Axford triplets found the net with Tyler and Brady scoring as part of a five-goal first-period outburst by the Bulldogs (8-6-1 overall). Then Lukas scored in the second and Brady added a second tally of his own to cap the scoring.

Tyler Axford got things going just 1:31 into the game when he scored his third goal of the year. His brothers both assisted on the goal.

Defenseman Jax Pierner then made it 2-0 Hancock at 4:40 with his third of the season. Ted Kilpela and Kirby Storm both assisted on the tally.

Brady Axford made it 3-0 with his eighth of the year at 6:06. Charlie Bastian and Forrest LaCourt both earned assists on the goal.

Hancock made it 4-0 when Chase Keranen found the net at 9:17. His second goal of the season was assisted by Connor Helminen and Luciano Paoli.

Ben Keranen struck on the power play to make it 5-0 at 12:47. Nolan Hanner and Ted Heinonen both helped set up Keranen’s fourth of the season.

In the middle frame, Kilpela struck 11:35 in while the Bulldogs were on the power play. His second of the season was assisted by Tyler Axford and Hanner.

Lukas Axford scored his eighth of the year at 12:07 off a feed from his brother, Brady.

Then, on another power play, Brady Axford scored his second goal of the game at 13:23. Paoli had the lone assist.

Finally, Helminen capped the scoring with 1:30 left in the period. Brady Axford picked up the lone assist on the play.

Bulldogs 4, Wildcats 1

Saturday, the Bulldogs scored twice in the first and twice more before giving up a goal in the third period en route to a 4-1 win over the Plymouth Wildcats.

Helminen scored his ninth goal of the season to open things just 1:19 into the game. Heinonen picked up the lone assist on the tally.

Paoli then scored the first of two goals with 3:48 remaining in the opening period. His first goal was assisted by Helminen.

Paoli’s second tally was the Bulldogs’ fourth and final goal at 3:07 of the third period. His 11th tally of the season was assisted by Helminen and Kilpela.

In the middle frame, Lukas Axford found the net for the ninth time this season. LaCourt and Tyler Axford earned assists on the goal, which came at 13:39.

Adrian Clarke broke up Bulldogs goaltender Adam Mikkola’s shutout bid at 7:08 of the third period.

Mikkola made 14 saves to earn the win.
