Copper Kings hockey holds off Bulldogs to earn win

HANCOCK — While the two teams traded a pair of goals in the first period, the Calumet Copper Kings hockey team was the only one to score in the second en route to a 3-2 win over the Hancock Bulldogs Saturday at the HoCo Arena in Hancock.

Co-captain Nathan Londo scored a goal and had two assists to lead the Copper Kings (14-4-1 overall) to the win.

His goal broke the 2-2 tie in the second period at 10:44. The goal, Londo’s 23rd of the season, held as the game-winner and was assisted by senior defenseman Drake Niemela and junior forward Brady Boberg.

Hancock (10-7-2 overall) struck first when junior forward Nolan Hanner scored just 2:43 into the game. Hanner’s ninth goal of the season was assisted by alternate captain Kirby Storm.

Calumet co-captain Erik Loukus evened things just 27 seconds later. The goal, Loukus’ eighth of the year, was assisted by Boberg and Londo.

Then Boberg gave the Copper Kings their first lead when he scored at 6:08. Niemela and Londo both assisted on Boberg’s 10th of the season.

Sophomore forward Connor Helminen scored for the Bulldogs to even things at 2-2 at 13:05. Sophomore forward Ted Kilpela picked up the first assist on Helminen’s 12th of the season. Sophomore defenseman Jax Pierner had the other assist.

Junior goaltender Beau Jukuri made 25 saves to earn the win for the Copper Kings. Hancock senior netminder Adam Mikkola made 31 saves in the loss.

The Copper Kings will face the Houghton Gremlins Monday at Dee Stadium. Opening faceoff is set for 7:15 p.m. The Bulldogs are back in action Thursday when they face Lakes Area United in Lakeland.
