CALUMET — With the game tied 5-5 going into the third period Saturday at the Calumet Colosseum, the Calumet Copper Kings hockey team needed a spark, and they got it in the form of junior forward Brady Boberg. Boberg, who had two goals in the game already, scored twice more in the final frame as the Copper Kings topped the Brother Rice Warriors, 8-5.
Boberg’s first goal of the night came just 14 seconds into the second period while Calumet was on the power play. Junior forward Luke Hamlin and senior defenseman Robert Loukus both earned assists.
His second tally came at 10:35 of the second, which doubled his goal output to that point in the season at four. Co-captains Erik Loukus and Nathan Londo both earned assists on the tally.
In the third, Boberg’s hat trick goal was scored at 5:35. Londo and junior defenseman Lewis Nagel picked up the assists on what stood as the game-winning goal.
Boberg’s fourth and final goal was an empty-net tally with two seconds remaining. Erik Loukus earned the lone assist.
The Warriors (3-11-0 overall) scored first just 1:22 into the game when Colin Mott found the net.
Senior defenseman Rogan Gronlund evened things for Calumet (10-4-1 overall) at 5:34. His third goal of the year was assisted by junior defenseman Kaden Cronenworth and senior forward Nathan Keranen.
Logan Jardine regained the one-goal lead for the Warriors at 6:30.
After Boberg’s first goal, which tied the game at 2-2, the Warriors got three in a row from Drake Spring, Zac Staelgraeve, and Alex Schins in just over a five-minute span to appear to take control of the game.
However, Boberg’s second tally cut the lead back to two at 5-3. Then, while on the power play, Londo found the net at 14:57. Senior defenseman Drake Niemela earned the lone assist on the goal, Londo’s 13th of the year.
Erik Loukus evened the game with just six seconds remaining in the second period to set up the third period heroics of Boberg. Loukus’ sixth goal of the season was assisted by Londo and Niemela.
In between Boberg’s two third-period tallies, Londo scored his second goal of the game while the Copper Kings were on a power play. Niemela and Erik Loukus both assisted on the goal.
After giving up five goals on 14 shots through two periods, junior goaltender Beau Jukuri stopped all eight Warriors’ shots in the final frame to earn the win for the Copper Kings.
