Gremlins hockey rolls to win over Grandville

HOUGHTON — With two goals in the second period, and a goal each in the first and third, the Houghton Gremlins earned their 12th straight win with a 4-1 victory over the Grandville Bulldogs Saturday at Dee Stadium in Houghton.

Houghton improved to 16-5-1 with the win.

Sophomore forward Gunner Gullstrand had two goals and an assist in the win for the Gremlins.

His first came on the power play just 53 seconds into the second period. The goal, Gullstrand’s fifth since joining Houghton, was set up by alternate captain Jack Sayen.

Gullstrand’s second of the afternoon came at 15:51. His sixth of the season, and sixth in six games, was assisted by junior forward Brody Donnelly and sophomore forward Braden Kari.

With the three points, Gullstrand improved to 13 points in six games this season.

His assist came on Donnelly’s 11th goal of the year, which tied the game at 1-1 with 1:31 remaining in the opening frame.

Alternate captain Noah Maillette scored Houghton’s fourth goal with just 29 seconds remaining in the contest. The goal, Maillette’s 22nd of the season, was assisted by captain Connor Arko.

Landon Smith scored the lone Grandville goal just 4:28 into the game.

Junior goaltender Brycyn Nettell made 23 saves to earn the win for Houghton. Ayden Karas made 44 saves in the loss for the Bulldogs.

The Gremlins are back in action Monday when they host the Calumet Copper Kings at Dee Stadium. Opening faceoff is set for 7:15 p.m.
