Gremlins swim teams top Patriots at home
HOUGHTON — At home in their own pool, the Houghton Gremlins swim teams swept the Westwood Patriots Thursday.
The boys won 128-25, while the girls won 131-46.
In the boys’ competition, Houghton got wins from Anderson Limkemann in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke.
Tate Evans won the 200-yard individual medley. Isaac Neva won the diving competition. Alex Svanidze won the 100-yard butterfly. Zhi Tao Yap won the 100-yard freestyle. Kameron Johnson won the 500-yard freestyle. William Jiang won the 100-yard backstroke.
“The team really stepped up today (Thursday),” said Gremlins coach Erik Johnson. “On the boys’ side, we had new qualifying times from Alex Svanidze in the 50-yard freestyle, Gunnar Carlson in the 100 fly, Kameron Johnson in the 500 free, and Evan Massaway in the 100 breaststroke.
“This may have been one of the best meets we have had in a long time, I’m actually really having a hard time wrapping my brain around it. The kids have really put in the work, and it is paying off in big ways.”
Erik Johnson has been impressed with how hard his boys’ team is working to shave precious seconds off of their times.
“The boys have been doing a good job of getting fired up for their races and really focusing on the task at hand,” he said. “Tonight, Gunnar Carlson had a huge swim in the 100 fly and dropped seven seconds to crush the qualifying time he has been chasing since last year. Evan Massaway also had a great meet, and dropped five seconds in the breaststroke to make that qualifying time.
“Tate Evans had an outstanding meet, making some huge improvements in all his events while pushing his teammates to best times along the way. Kameron Johnson had a great meet posting best times in all his events, but the highlight was his 24 seconds in the 500 and crushing his previous best. The 400 free relay also stepped up and dropped another three seconds off their best time.”
On the girls’ side, Houghton had several more individual winners.
Evelyn LaTendresse won both the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly.
Lydia Williams won the 200-yard individual medley. Kayleigh Dart won the 100-yard freestyle. Aya Keteri took the 500-yard freestyle. Delaney Salmi earned a win in the 100-yard backstroke. Ahri Olson won the 100-yard breaststroke.
“We had a lot of really great swims today,” said Erik Johnson. “We had new qualifying times from Ahri Olson in both the 50 free and 100 breaststroke, Aya Keteri in the 50 free, and Joanna DeYcaza in the 100 fly.”
Erik Johnson could not get over the number of top times his team posted.
“When I looked over the results, we had 80 best times posted between the girls and boys today, that isn’t something that happens often,” he said. “The team was fired up today for our first dual meet at home, and it really showed in the results.
“Ahri Olson has been a leader on our team, and I was very happy for her to make those cut times she has been chasing since last year. Joanna DeYcaza improved a ton from last year to this year, she dropped another five seconds from the 100 fly to make the qualifying time tonight. Aya Keteri had a really nice 500 tonight. She has been putting in a ton of work and always brings the right attitude to practice, so I knew she was due for a good one. I was also happy for our girls 400 free relay, they swam a strong race and improved our time by five seconds.”
