Miners 50, Copper Kings 34
CALUMET — Andrew Junttila and Peter Torola both finished in double figures, but it was not enough to overcome a slow start as the Calumet Copper Kings boys basketball team came up short Monday at home against the Negaunee Miners, 50-34.
Junttila and Torola both finished with 10 points each for the Copper Kings. Junttila got started quickly, picking up a 3-pointer in the opening quarter along with another basket. However, the Miners got a 3-pointer of their own from Cole Pekrul and 13 points overall to come away with a 13-7 lead after eight minutes.
In the second quarter, both offenses were better. Tristan Slater, who led all scorers with 17, picked up five in the quarter for the Miners. Ethan Gauthier added six of his 10 points in the quarter as well.
Torola found the basket twice to drive Calumet to 12 points for quarter. Trent Anderson added a 3-pointer as well.
Trailing 29-19 at the start of the third quarter, Calumet got a 3-pointer from John Golus and a second one from Anderson, but just four free throws beyond those two baskets.
Slater took control of the game on his own with four baskets in the eight-minute span, and the Miners headed into the fourth leading 42-29.
Gauthier added four points in the final eight minutes, as did Waylon Harvala.
Calumet got a 3-pointer from Ethan Halonen and a basket from Torola, but could not add any further offense before the final buzzer.
Cardinals 80, Panthers 49
WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield-Marenisco Cardinals boys basketball team got 44 points combined from two players and used that to boost them to an 80-49 win over the Chassell Panthers Monday.
Chassell was led by Brayden Larson, who finished with 15 points, and Grady Olson, who finished with 13. Both players had two baskets each in the first quarter as the Panthers scored 13.
In the second, Tanner Kilpela scored a pair of baskets to help the Panthers to eight points for the quarter. However, the Panthers trailed 43-21 at the break.
Larson added a 3-pointer in the third, and Olson had a basket and a free throw as part of a nine-point quarter.
Chassell’s offense finally broke through in the fourth, as Larson hit a 3-pointer, and Tanner Elenich added a pair of his own as the Panthers scored 19 in the final eight minutes.
Brock Pangrazzi led the Cardinals with 23 points while going 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Garett Prisbe added 21, thanks to the strength of three 3-pointers.
