CALUMET — After a tight first quarter, the Baraga Vikings girls basketball team found a way in the second quarter to solve the Calumet Copper Kings’ defense, and once they did that, they did not look back in a 51-36 win Tuesday in the Calumet Gym.

Kara Roberts led the way for the Vikings with 18 points, but she was held in check for the first half, where she scored only six points on a pair of 3-pointers. However, as she and her teammates started to get comfortable offensively, she responded with a third triple in the third quarter and then three baskets in the fourth.

Baraga led 7-2 after one quarter, thanks in part to four points from Mya Hendrickson, who finished with 11.

Hendrickson continued to find the basket in the second quarter, scoring five points and helping the Vikings outscore the Copper Kings 15-7 over the eight-minute span.

Leading 22-9 when the second half started, the Vikings continued to put pressure on the Copper Kings as Cara Connor racked up eight of her 10 points in the frame. However, Calumet was able to push back, thanks to the efforts of Bailey Strom, who scored 11 points in the quarter. She finished her night with a team-high 16 points.

Millie Loukus also hit a 3-pointer in the quarter as well.

In the fourth quarter, both teams scored 10 points each. The Vikings were driven by Roberts, who had seven points in the frame. Loukus did her best to match that effort, scoring six for the Copper Kings.

Starting at $3.50/week.
