CALUMET — Despite 15 points from Peter Torola, the Calumet Copper Kings boys could not contain the West Iron County Wykons Friday at home. The Wykons turned a 12-12 game after one quarter into a 28-17 lead at half, and never looked back, winning 53-38.
Torola and Owen Loukus each hit 3-pointers in the first quarter as the Copper Kings held their ground against Seth Oberlin, who had six of game-high 26 points in the opening frame.
Things changed significantly in the second, as Oberlin made five baskets as part of 16-point frame. Torola and John Golus had a basket each for the Copper Kings, who found themselves outscored 16-5 in the quarter and trailing at half.
The third quarter looked much like the second, with the Wykons spreading their offense around. Oberlin made two baskets and three others chipped in with one of their own. Golus answered with three points for Calumet, along with a single basket by Trent Anderson. The Copper Kings were behind 39-22 going into the final eight minutes.
Torola caught fire in the fourth, making two baskets before dropping a pair of 3-pointers. Levi Lysinmaa, Parker Krumm and Andrew Junttila also found the basket once each as the Copper Kings scored 16 points.
Oberlin answered with six points, and Christian Robles hit a 3-pointer as West Iron scored 12 in the frame.
