Copper Kings hockey earns split at showcase

TRENTON — The Calumet Copper Kings hockey team had a tough task with their draw in the MIHL Showcase. They dropped their first game on Friday to Detroit Catholic Central, but bounced back Saturday with a win over Cleveland St. Ignatius.

With the split, the Copper Kings are now 15-6-1 on the season.

Shamrocks 4, Copper Kings 0

The Shamrocks scored a goal in each of the first two periods and then doubled that in the final frame to earn a 4-0 win over the Copper Kings Friday in Trenton.

Dominic Testani scored each of the first two goals for the Shamrocks. The first came on the power play at 10:33 of the opening frame. The second came with 2:52 left in the second period.

In the third, Kristian Marchese and Sean Goff scored to extend the lead to 4-0.

Junior goaltender Beau Jukuri made 36 saves in the loss for the Copper Kings.

Copper Kings 4, Wildcats 2

Co-captain Erik Loukus scored twice as the Copper Kings earned a 4-2 win over the Cleveland St. Ignatius Wildcats Saturday.

Erik Loukus put Calumet on the board first just 39 seconds into the contest. His ninth goal of the season was assisted by senior defenseman Robert Loukus.

Robert Loukus then scored one himself at 5:51. The goal was Loukus’ fourth of the season.

The Wildcats scored twice in the final 7:38 of the opening period to tie things up. The first came off the stick of T.J. Hulec at 9:22. The second came on the power play at 15:58 by Brady Acton.

In the second period, Tyler Halonen put the Copper Kings up 3-2 with a goal at 10:37. The goal, his first of the season, was assisted by senior defenseman Sawyer Garrow and junior forward Brady Boberg.

Looking for insurance in the third, Calumet got it when Erik Loukus scored his second of the game at 9:08. Alternate captain Ben Anderson earned the lone assist on the goal.

Jukuri made 21 saves to earn the win for the Copper Kings.

The Copper Kings are off until Friday when they travel to Marquette to take on the Sentinels. Opening faceoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
