CALUMET — The Great Lakes Hockey Conference announced its All-Conference teams Wednesday afternoon.

Jeffers coach Aaron Helminen was named the Don Miller Coach of the Year after leading the Jets to a 19-7-1 overall record, which was enough to win the conference title.

For individual player awards, Escanaba Eskymos senior forward Graham Johnson won the Jim Crawford Player of the Year award, and Marquette Sentinels sophomore defenseman Jacob Spagnuolo won the Rick Miller Rookie of the Year award.

Johnson helped the Eskymos to a 17-9-1 record. He scored 47 goals and 75 points in 27 games this season. Those totals included seven power play goals, nine shorthanded goals and seven game-winning goals.

Spagnuolo chipped in offensively for the Sentinels, helping them to a 17-7-3 record. He scored two goals and 19 points in 27 games.

On the All-GLHC First Team, Jeffers co-captains Brogan Turner and Kasen Helminen were both named, Turner as a forward and Helminen in goal. Calumet co-captain Nathan Londo and senior defenseman Drake Niemela were also named, along with Marquette senior forward Brody Sheldon and Escanaba defenseman Nolan Bink.

Turner led the Jets in scoring this season, scoring 35 goals and 60 points in 25 games.

“Brogan’s been that leader,” said Aaron Helminen, “wears the ‘C’ (captain). He doesn’t have a lot of words as far as in the locker room and stuff with the boys, but leads by example through his hard work. (He) has speed, and he has turned out to be one of our best penalty killers this season too. (He’s) just a kid that understands what it is that we expect game in and game out.”

Kasen Helminen started all 26 games he played in this season. He went 18-7-1 with a 2.94 goals against average and a .876 save percentage.

“”That’s probably the biggest takeaway with that is just having that senior goalie back there that’s been solid for us, and allowed our defensive core to go through their growing pains,” said Aaron Helminen. “Him just staying focused when games don’t go well.”

Londo, despite playing in just 19 games, led the Copper Kings in scoring, with 23 goals and 40 points.

“Nathan’s a multiplier, I would consider him, because he’s got 40, but whoever he’s playing with definitely does better, without a doubt,” Copper Kings coach Dan Giachino said. “I think the five games prior to him getting hurt, I think he had 20 points, one of his other linemates had 15, and the other one had 11 or 12. So, it’s that ability that he brings to the lineup that is certainly missing right now. We’ve got to keep trying to figure out a way to, to navigate without him.”

Niemela led the Copper Kings defensive corps, discovering his offensive ability along the way. He played in all 27 games, scoring three goals and 22 points.

“The biggest thing that he’s done over the last couple years is that his skating’s improved dramatically,” Giachino said. “We took him up due to some injuries, got him to play and a little bit there in some limited situations as a sophomore. His biggest limiting factor at that point was his skating ability. Over the last 12 to 15 months, his skating has just gradually improved and improved and improved to the point now where I don’t feel like skating is, in any way shape or form, a weakness for him. He’s jumping up in the play a lot. He’s able to get back in situations where he does jump up, and he’s just worked really, really hard at that.”

The All-GLHC Second Team features Hancock alternate captain Kirby Storm, Calumet co-captain Erik Loukus, and Jeffers sophomore defenseman Blake Heltunen. Also on the team are Escanaba senior forward Ben Sands, and Marquette senior defenseman Brody LeMire and senior goaltender Parker Nevenhoven.

Storm tied as the Bulldogs’ top scorer, netting a team-high 19 goals and 37 points in 27 games.

Loukus had a very strong season as the Copper Kings’ top center. He scored 12 goals and led the Copper Kings with 27 assists in 27 games.

Heltunen led the Jets’ defense in his second full season at the varsity level. He scored eight goals and 36 points while quarterbacking the team’s top power play unit.

Earning honorable mention were Calumet junior goaltender Beau Jukuri, Hancock sophomore forward Connor Helminen, and Jeffers senior defenseman Griffin Heinonen. Also earning honorable mention were Escanaba senior defenseman Owen LaBonte, Kingsford senior forward Will Murvich, Marquette junior forward Seth Sandstrom, and Negaunee senior forward Nolan O’Dovero.

Starting at $3.50/week.
