Gremlins girls swim team wins, boys fall to Marquette
HOUGHTON — The Houghton Gremlins swim teams split with Marquette Tuesday in the Houghton pool. The girls won, 104-80, while the boys fell, 95-81.
The boys had no individual winners on the afternoon, but that did not stop them from battling hard.
“The boys fought hard and made a lot of improvements,” said Gremlins coach Erik Johnson. “Despite not taking any individual wins, the depth of the team shined bright tonight by coming within 15 points of the win.”
Gunnar Carlson and Tate Evans both swam well enough to qualify for the U.P. Finals in the 200-yard freestyle. Isaac Neva also qualified in his race, the 50-yard freestyle.
On the girls’ side, the Gremlins picked up multiple wins.
Evelyn LaTendresse won the 200-yard individual medley. Kayleigh Dart won the 100-yard freestyle. Aya Keteri won the 500-yard freestyle.
Ahri Olson won the 100-yard breaststroke.
The 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard freestyle team of Keteri, Lydia Williams, LaTendresse, and Dart won both races as well.
“This was a huge win for the girls,” Johnson said. “The last time the girls beat Marquette head-to-head was in 2017. We had a lot of great swims and fought hard in all our races.
“Kayleigh Dart had a great meet, and swam some really important relay legs for us. Aya Keteri had one of her best meets with best times in both the 200 free and 500 free, while swimming two strong legs on our free relays.”
