Gremlins swim teams defeat Ishpeming-Negaunee
HOUGHTON — The Houghton Gremlins swim teams were back in the pool Thursday, and both had strong showings as they both defeated Ishpeming-Negaunee at home.
The boys won, 118-60, while the girls earned a 127-57 victory.
On the boys’ side, the Gremlins had several individual winners to go along with wins in all the relay slots.
Alex Svanidze won the 200-yard freestyle, Anderson Limkemann won the 50-yard freestyle, and Kameron Johnson won the 100-yard freestyle. William Jiang took the 500-yard freestyle and Tate Evans won the 100-yard breaststroke.
“The boys swam well with a lot of best times,” said Gremlins coach Erik Johnson, “including a few new qualifying times from Kameron Johnson in the 100 free and Anderson Limkemann in the 50 free.”
On the girls’ side, the Gremlins again had a number of individual winners to go along with wins all the relay slots.
Delaney Salmi won the 200-yard freestyle, Shania Aepli won the 200-yard individual medley, and Kaitlyn Coponen won the 100-yard butterfly. Aya Keteri won the 500-yard freestyle, and Evelyn LaTendresse won the 100-yard breaststroke.
For the girls, Johnson was proud of how they bounced back from their previous meet.
“The girls had an outstanding meet coming off a very tough meet on Tuesday,” he said. “Aya Keteri swam well in all her events, and dropped time again in the 500 free.”
While others did not earn wins, Johnson loved what he saw from another pair of girls.
“One major highlight was Thora Bier dropping over four seconds to qualify in the 100 breaststroke,” he said. “Naomi Frahm also had her best day on the diving board to take second overall in that event.”
