Gremlins swim teams split at home against Kingsford
HOUGHTON — The Houghton Gremlins swim teams split a dual meet last week with Kingsford in the Houghton High School pool.
The boys earned a 91-80 win, while the girls came close, but ultimately fell, 95-85.
The boys only had two individual winners on the afternoon, but that did not slow down their momentum throughout the meet.
William Jiang won the 500-yard freestyle race and Isaac Neva won the diving competition.
“The boys showed their depth, only winning two individual events and one relay, but coming away with the victory,” said Gremlins coach Erik Johnson. “We had a lot of great swims and everyone stepped up with the chances they were given.
“New qualifiers included William Jiang in the 500 free and Kameron Johnson in the 100 backstroke.”
Johnson was extremely pleased with the effort from top to bottom.
“I was really impressed with everyone today,” he said. “For a mid-season meet without rest, this was something that I hadn’t expected going in, but the kids stepped up to the challenge.”
The girls also had two individual winners with Kaitlyn Coponen winning the 100-yard butterfly and Meg Ruohonen winning the diving competition.
One other earned a qualifying time.
“The girls had a close one with Kingsford, who is also very deep and talented,” Johnson said. “We had a new qualifier in Fiona Brassard in the 200 individual medley.
“We had some really great swims, and both our free relays dropped time so they are starting to click.
“We have a busy week next week with meets at home on Tuesday and Thursday. It should be an exciting time so come out and support the team.”
