Gremlins swim teams top Rudyard, Sault

HOUGHTON — Looking for a strong showing at home, the Houghton Gremlins swim teams got that Saturday when they both defeated the Rudyard Bulldogs and the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils in their home pool. The boys won 108-93 over the Sault, with Rudyard scoring 20, and the girls won, 151-89 over Rudyard, with the Sault Area scoring 69 points.

For the boys, Tate Evans won the 200-yard individual medley, Isaac Neva won the diving, Alex Svanidze took the 100-yard butterfly. Adam Hemmer earned a win in the 500-yard freestyle, and Kameron Johnson took the 100-yard backstroke.

“On the boys’ side, we had some outstanding swims by Adam Hemmer, who qualified in his first two events of the season, the 200 free and 500 free,” said Gremlins coach Erik Johnson. “Luke Meyer also got a qualifying time in the 200 free as well. Christian Raasio also found his pace in the 100 breaststroke to qualify for his first event.”

Johnson felt that the win really sets the boys up for success.

“The team is really geared up and ready to rock next weekend,” he said.

On the girls’ side, Aya Keteri won the 200-yard freestyle, Kayleigh Dart took the 50-yard freestyle. Meg Ruohonen won the diving, while Evelyn LaTendresse won the 100-yard freestyle, and Fiona Brassard took the 100-yard backstroke.

“On the girls side, it was an impressive showing by Delaney Salmi, by making her first cut in the 200 free,” said Johnson. “Cece Markham also qualified in diving with her last attempt.

“It was senior night, so very fitting that both Cece and Delaney are seniors. What a way to cap off the season.”
