Huskies women fall in regular season road finale to No. 16 Bulldogs
BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — The Michigan Tech Huskeis women’s basketball team held No. 16-ranked Ferris State to its lowest scoring GLIAC game, but 24 turnovers were too much to overcome, dropping a 62-45 decision at the Jim Wink Arena on Monday.
Michigan Tech (15-11, 9-9 GLIAC) was led by 11 points by junior guard Alyssa Wypych, nearing a double-double with nine rebounds. Senior guard Soraya Timms chipped in nine points as sophomore guard Kendall Standfest recorded eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
“It was a weird, low-scoring night and our first six out of eight were turnovers; that’s never a great start,” said Huskies coach Sam Clayton. “From then on, we couldn’t get in a rhythm. Credit to Ferris State, they defended hard and when we weren’t making threes, they clogged the paint and made things difficult for us. We defended them well to beat them, we’ve just got to find a way to get in rhythm offensively.”
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half, although Ferris State (23-4, 16-2 GLIAC) held a 28-21 lead entering halftime, translating 16 turnovers into 13 points.
Emma Schierbeek led all scorers with 11 points through half, connecting on 3-of-6 triples to go with two free throws. Kadyn Blanchard had five steals in the first half and added five points and four dimes.
Junior guard Dani Nuest led the Huskies in scoring with seven points in 14 minutes on 3-of-6 shooting, hitting one of her two tries from beyond the arc.
After going 9-32 from the field in the first half, the Bulldogs outpaced the Huskies 19-8 in scoring in the third period, with free throws by Mya Hiram putting the home team ahead by its largest lead of the day (47-29).
Michigan Tech won the fourth quarter 16-15 with a layup by Wypych with 5:22, slimming the Bulldogs’ lead to 10 points (49-39). However, the home team would get back ahead by 17 points off a triple by Blanchard with three minutes to go, before ultimately pulling off a 62-45 win with freshman guard Bella Hanna concluding the scoring with a layup at the 1:13 mark.
Blanchard led a trio of Bulldogs in double-figure scoring with a game-best 20 points. Riley controlled the glass with a team-high 11 rebounds to go with three assists.
