Keteri sets school record as Gremlins swim teams take on Sentinels

MARQUETTE — Jeffers swimmer Aya Keteri, who competes for the Houghton Gremlins, had a remarkable day Tuesday in the pool in Marquette as she set a new school record in the 500-yard freestyle.

Both the Gremlins boys and girls teams struggled to keep up with the Sentinels in the end, as both teams lost, but Keteri’s race was a big highlight for the day.

“Aya Keteri won the 500 free,” said Gremlins coach Erik Johnson. “She broke the Jeffers school record by seven seconds.

“Aya has been a workhorse this year, and we are very proud of her for the progress she keeps making.”

The girls lost 104-79.

The boys did not fare any better, falling 104-69.

Isaac Neva was the lone winner on the day, taking the diving competition.

Despite the scores, Johnson was proud of the day that Luke Meyer had as he qualified in the 500-yard freestyle.

“We had a first time qualifier from Luke Meyer today in the 500,” Johnson said. “That was a huge accomplishment for him.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
