LAKE LINDEN — Playoff action got underway on the boys’ basketball court Monday. In MHSAA Division 4 District 98 quarterfinal play, the Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes earned a 65-59 win over the Chassell Panthers.

This was the third time these two teams had played, and the result was the same.

“Ball movement was key for us tonight,” said Lakes coach Brett Poissant. “Everybody got involved and did their role. That is how we win games. When not everybody is involved, then we tend to be easy to stop.”

Bodie Fortin opened the game with a triple for the Lakes. That set the tone for them to then connect for nine unanswered points. However, the Panthers found their rhythm and rallied for a brief 14-13 lead, only to have the Lakes sink another three and lead 16-14 after one.

Both teams scored 16 in the second, and it was a 32-30 Lakes lead at half.

The Lakes pulled ahead in the third as they opened with a 13-3 scoring difference. They were up by 10 at 45-35 with less than two minutes to go in the quarter.

They led 48-40 with one quarter to go.

“We were hitting our shots and our rebounding was good,” Poissant said.

In the waning minutes of the fourth, Chassell came within two at 59-57, but the Lakes were cool and collected at the free throw line, eventually winning by six.

While Poissant liked the team play, he gave the game ball to Josh Daavettila, who led the scoring with 29 points. Nine of those came from the free throw line (9-of-10).

“Another great game for Josh,” said Poissant. “He was clutch at the line and was deadly under the hoop.”

Blake Lebo had 12 points, and Bentley Rozman had 10 points for the Lakes.

Brayden Larson led the scoring for Panthers with 27. Dayne Tarvis had 15 and Luke Tarvis added 11.
