Purple Hornets boys top Copper Kings
L’ANSE — Sam Lee posted 20 points to help lift the L’Anse Purple Hornets boys basketball team to a 64-45 win Monday over the Calumet Copper Kings.
Lee got things rolling right away, scoring nine points in the first quarter himself of the 21 the Purple Hornets poured in. He hit one 3-pointer as part of that total. Talan Larson also added a 3-pointer.
Calumet scored eight points in the opening eight minutes on the strength of a 3-pointer each from John Golus and Owen Loukus.
In in the second quarter, the Purple Hornets scored 11 more points, thanks, in part, to three baskets from Lee, and a 3-pointer from Miles Vanalstine.
Peter Torola, who led the Copper Kings with 12 points, scored half of those points in the quarter as Calumet trailed 32-17 at half.
Quentin Supanich had a huge third quarter for L’Anse, scoring three baskets. Keegan Davidson added three of his own, along with two free throws. Both players scored 10 for the Purple Hornets in the game.
Torola scored six of the Copper Kings’ 10 points in the quarter.
Calumet won the fourth quarter battle, 18-13. Owen Peterson racked up a 3-pointer, two baskets and two free throws over the stretch as he scored all nine of his points.
Supanich led the Purple Hornets with a pair of baskets.
