Roundup: Copper Kings, Gremlins girls earn wins Monday evening

Copper Kings 47, Jets 18

CALUMET — With 16 points from Bailey Strom, the Calumet Copper Kings girls basketball team earned a 47-18 win Monday evening over the Jeffers Jets at the Calumet gym.

Calumet set the tone in the opening quarter, as Bailey Strom picked up a basket, made one of two free throw attempts and then drained a pair of 3-pointers as part of a 15-point quarter for the hosts. Jess Anderson and Kiirsi Johnson also hit a 3-pointer each.

The Jets got four points in the form of a pair of baskets from Mia Nordstrom. Nordstrom finished with five points to lead the Jets, along with Kylee Kangas.

In the second quarter, the Copper Kings turned a 15-6 lead into a 27-8 lead by halftime.

Bailey Strom hit another 3-pointer, as did Johnson. Millie Loukus and Kaitlynn Pennala both made a basket each.

In the third quarter, Calumet continued to keep the pressure on. Kyla Strom made three baskets as the Copper Kings scored eight more points.

Kangas had all five Jets’ points on a 3-pointer and a basket.

Sophia Johnson hit a 3-pointer for the Jets in the fourth quarter, but the only other basket was made by Remi Coponen.

For Calumet, Bailey Strom made a pair of baskets, as Maretta Kangas and Cali Hodges made one each as part of a 12-point final eight minutes.

Gremlins 49, Sentinels 44

MARQUETTE — With two players finishing in double figures, the Houghton Gremlins girls basketball team was able to withstand a 20-point night from the Marquette Sentinels’ Avery Osborne to earn a 49-44 win at home Monday.

Ruby Zawada led the Gremlins in scoring with 16 points. Jacey Sleeman chipped in with 11 points to help pace Houghton’s offense on the night.
