CALUMET — High school postseason basketball continued on Wednesday as the Calumet girls welcomed the West Iron County Wykons to their gym for a Division 3 District 65 semifinal game.

The Copper Kings (9-11) downed the Wykons, 69-44, just as they did twice during the regular season. They won their first game with them 58-37, and their away game against them 57-28. Wednesday’s victory earned them the series sweep.

“I liked our energy tonight,” said Copper Kings coach Charlie Kemppainen. “We got an early lead, and that set the tone. Records don’t matter this time of year. We came out and executed.”

That early lead equated to a 19-8 first quarter advantage after one. It grew to a 30-point difference by halftime as Calumet led 45-15. Good ball work and teamwork was key as was a defense that forced a lot of turnovers.

The Wykons ( 7-15) were the better team on paper in the third and fourth quarters. They outscored the Copper Kings 13-10 in the third and 16-14 in the fourth. However it was not enough to catch their opponent.

“Game ball goes to Kiirsi Johnson,” said Kemppainen.

She had 19 points. Also in double figures for the Copper Kings were Kiirsi Johnson, who also had 19, and Jess Anderson, who posted 10.

For the Wykons, Lily DeSousa led the scoring with 12.
