Huskies women’s tennis wins fifth straight to open GLIAC play

HOUGHTON — The Michigan Tech Huskies women’s tennis team opened GLIAC play with a 5-2 victory over Saginaw Valley State Saturday at the Gates Tennis Center.

The Huskies have won five in a row and improved to 8-3 overall.

Michigan Tech took the doubles points with a pair of wins. Junior Emily Rose and junior Bella Bigari won 6-4 at No. 1 doubles, while junior Caoimhe McDonnell and redshirt junior Emily Cojocaru won 6-3 in the No. 2 position.

Cojocaru and Rose won their singles matches to go unbeaten on the day. Cojocaru won 6-2, 4-6, and 6-1 in the No. 3 position. Rose trailed 6-4 after the first set but won the second two 6-2 and 7-6 (9-7).

Sophomore Alexandra Nikonenko won 7-5, 4-6, and 6-3 in the No. 1 singles spot. Sophomore Anamarija Ukic won 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 in the No. 6 position.
