Copper Country girls honored with All-UP awards
MARQUETTE — The Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association announced their All-UP boys basketball teams Wednesday. Gladstone and Ishpeming both earned key honors as the Braves’ Lillie Johnson earned Miss Basketball honors, Division 1-3 Player of the Year, and Dream Team. Ishpeming’s Jenessa Eagle was named Division 4 Player of the Year, and Ishpeming was named Division 4 Team of the Year, while coach Ryan Reichel earned Division 4 Coach of the Year.
Division 3 Coach of the Year went to Mike O’Donnell of Negaunee. The Miners were named Division 1-3 Team of the Year.
The Dream Team included Johnson, a senior, Eagle, a senior, Ewen-Trout Creek sophomore Bree Besonen, Ishpeming senior Mya Hemmer, and Negaunee junior Gretel Johsnon.
Houghton senior Ellie Hainault earned First Team honors. She was joined by Kingsford sophomore Aubrie Moore, Marquette freshman Avery Osbourne, and Gladstone junior Eva Pankonien.
Houghton junior Ruby Zawada was named to the Second Team, along with Calumet junior Bailey Strom.
Also named to the Second Team were Gwinn’s Makayla Delmont, Ironwood’s Jaelyn Novascone, Negaunee’s Clare O’Donnell, Menominee’s Lexi Marineau, West Iron County’s Bristol Shamion, Kingsford’s Alyvia Kowalski and Cassie Olson, and Marquette’s Lexi Curran.
Jeffers senior Mya Nordstrom was given special mention.
In Division 4, Baraga senior Kara Roberts and Ewen-Trout Creek senior Emma Besonen were both named to the First Team. Joining them were Norway senior Lauren Adams, Newberry sophomore Gracie Johnson, and Munising sophomore Addie Bowerman.
Baraga sophomore Mya Hendrickson, Ewen-Trout Creek senior Irelynd McGeshick, Hancock senior Emery Chynoweth, L’Anse sophomore Kwynn Voskuhl, and Lake Linden-Hubbell senior Cleo Milkey were all named to the Second Team.
Crystal Falls Forest Park’s Elsie Williams, St. Ignace’s Katie Halberg, Mackinac Island’s Lakelyn Bunker, Wakefield-Marenisco’s Emily DelFavero, Cedarville-DeTour’s Makenna Smith, Newberry’s Sydney Duflo, and North Central’s Addison Otradaveck were also named to the Second Team.
Baraga eighth-grader Danica Jahfetson was given honorable mention.
