Jets softball sweeps Purple Hornets

L’ANSE — The Jeffers Jets softball team’s offense showed through Wednesday, as they defeated the host L’Anse Purple Hornets, 14-13, and 19-0.
In the opening game, shortstop Meg Ruohonen led the Jets’ offense from the lead off spot, going 3-for-4 with a walk, four runs scored, and three RBI, along with two home runs. In the nightcap, first baseman Svea Johnson drove the offense. She went 3-for-4 with one run scored and four RBI.
The Jets established themselves right from the start of the opener, scoring four runs in the first inning, and two more in each of the next three innings. They scored four more runs over the final two innings to earn the win.
Ruohonen led off with a walk to start the game. Two batters later, second baseman Janet Mattila walked, putting runners on the corners. Two batters after that, third baseman Kylee Andrews was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Pitcher Elli Kuntze walked, which scored Ruohonen. KayDee Archambeau then made it 4-0 when she hit a double to left field, which cleared the bases.
The Purple Hornets responded in the bottom half of the first. Left fielder Teri Ahola walked. Three batters later, Ahola scored on a wild pitch while shortstop Lela Cichosz was at the plate. Cichosz walked, as did right fielder Willow Rerford, but a second baseman Tessa Thor strikeout ended the inning.
In the top of the second, Jeffers got back to work.
Ruohonen led off with a single to center field. Two batters later, Mattila singled to left., scoring Ruohonen in the process. Johnson was hit by a pitch. Andrews walked, which loaded the bases. A wild pitch allowed Mattila to score while Kuntze was at the plate, putting Jeffers up 6-1.
L’Anse got one run back in the bottom half of the inning. Pitcher Kenzie Bianco reached on a one-out pop fly. Center fielder Mackenzie Dasicki followed with a double to left field, scoring Bianco.
In the top of the third, the Jets were back at it. Right fielder Addi Randell singled to center to lead off. Left fielder Lilah Hill sacrificed to move Randell to second. Ruohonen then hit an inside-the-park two-run home run, and suddenly Jeffers led 8-2.
The Purple Hornets needed something to break their way, and it did in the bottom half of the inning. Catcher Sylvia Allen walked to lead off. Two batters later, Rerford walked, putting runners on the corners. Thor then walked to load the bases, but before the play ended, Allen and Rerford scored, making it 8-4. Bianco then walked. Thor scored on a wild pitch with Dasicki at the plate.
Up just three, the Jets looked for some separation and got it in the top of the fourth.
Andrews was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Two batters later, Archambeau singled to left, scoring Andrews. Randell then singled to right field, scoring Archambeau, and making it 10-5 Jeffers.
L’Anse got one back in the bottom half of the inning. First baseman Kwynn Voskuhl led off with a triple to center. Allen then grounded out, but Voskuhl scored on the play, making it 10-6 Jets.
In the top of the fifth, the Jets added to their lead. Mattila was hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Andrews singled to right field, and Mattila scored. Kuntze walked. Archambeau then singled to right field, scoring Andrews.
Randell then singled to center, scoring Kuntze. Jeffers led 13-6 at that point.
The Purple Hornet clawed back into the game in the bottom half of the inning. Bianco singled to lead off. Dasicki was hit by a pitch. Ahola singled, scoring both runners. Two batters later, Ahola scored on a wild pitch. At that point, it was 13-9 in favor of the Jets.
Ruohonen was not about to let the Jets fall behind. She led off the top of the sixth with a solo home run to center field, making it 14-9.
L’Anse came up just short in their comeback big in the bottom half of the sixth.
Third baseman Lindsey Biekkola led off with a walk. Bianco reached on an error. Dasicki walked to load the bases. Biekkola scored on a wild pitch, and Bianco scored on another one in the same at bat by Ahola. Ahola then sacrificed to score Dasicki.
Voskuhl was hit by a pitch. Allen walked. Voskuhl then scored by stealing home, and pulled the Purple Hornets back within one, 14-13.
However, Cichosz struck out to end the game.
Kuntze went 5 1/3 innings for the Jets in the circle, striking out five, walking 12 and giving up seven hits. Mattila pitched 2/3 of one inning, striking out one in relief.
Bianco went six innings for the Purple Hornets, striking out four, walking six, and giving up 12 hits.
In the nightcap, the Jets served as the home team. They jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, expanded that to 13-0 after two, and then added six more in the third before winning via mercy.
In the bottom of the first, Ruohonen led off with a walk. Two batters later, Mattila singled to second, and Ruohonen scored. Johnson then singled to center. Andrews was hit by a pitch. Archambeau then sacrificed to score Mattila.
The bottom of the second saw the Jets start quickly as Savannah Hendrickson was hit by a pitch to lead off. Ruohonen walked, as did Naomi Frahm, to load the bases. Mattila then drew a walk, which scored Hendrickson. Johnson singled to center, scoring Ruohonen and Frahm.
Andrews singled to third. Archambeau followed with a sacrifice that scored Mattila. Randell was hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Hendrickson walked, but not before Andrews scored on a wild pitch. The Jets led 8-0 at that point.
Ruohonen then singled after Randell scored by stealing home. Frahm walked, loading the bases. Mattila then doubled to right field, scoring Hendrickson and Ruohonen. Johnson then singled to center, scoring Frahm and Mattila, making it 13-0.
The bottom of third opened with a center fielder Lydia Larson walk to lead off. Randell then singled to right field. Hill grounded out, but both runners scored. Hendrickson walked. Ruohonen was hit by a pitch. Frahm then doubled to center, scoring both runners.
Mattila was hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Andrews was walked, loading the bases. Larson was then hit by a pitch, scoring Frahm. Randell then was hit by a pitch, scoring Mattila and extending the lead to 19-0 at that point.
Mattila threw three innings in the circle, striking out one, and surrendering five hits to earn the win for the Jets.
