Lakes softball scores in bunches in sweep of Coleman

COLEMAN — In their first action since the Spring Swing in Marquette, the Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes softball team traveled to Coleman, Wisconsin, and beat the Coleman Cougars twice Saturday, 17-3 and 17-0.

In the opening game, third baseman Cleo Milkey helped lead the way, going 3-for-5 at the plate with a home run and four RBI.

Pitcher Payton Goldsworthy was also great at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. In the circle, Goldsworthy was excellent, giving up six hits and three runs while striking out 14 and walking just three.

In the nightcap, the sophomore, playing her third year of varsity softball, went 3-for-3, hit another home run and racked up six RBI. In the circle, she threw a one-hitter, striking out eight and walking one.

The Lakes got things going very quickly in the first inning of the opening game. Milkey singled to lead off. Catcher Taylor Goldsworthy followed with a single to center. Then Payton Goldsworthy had her first hit of the game, a single to left field, which loaded the bases.

Shortstop Sophia Hampton singled to short, which brought Milkey home. Three batters later, Second baseman Megan Sutherland laid down a bunt and both Goldsworthy sisters scored on the play and Lake Linden led 3-0.

In the second, Paige Griffin reached on an error with one out to get things started. She was able to get to third before the play came to an end. Milkey followed with a single to second, scoring Griffin on the play. Taylor Goldsworthy singled, and then Payton Goldsworthy reached on an error, scoring Milkey. Hampton brought Taylor Goldsworthy home with a single to left.

Jovie Daniels then singled to left, allowing Payton Goldsworthy to score, and the Lakes led 7-0 at that point.

In the top of the third, the Lakes struck again.

Left fielder Hailey Crouch singled to right field. Three batters later, Taylor Goldsworthy brought her home with a double to left field.

The Cougars got two back in the bottom of the fourth, and neither team could add to the score in the fifth, making it an 8-2 game going into the top of the sixth.

The Lakes popped off for nine runs in the inning. It started with a Hampton single to center field. Daniels followed with a single to left field. Right fielder Kyara Mills then singled to left, scoring Hampton. Sutherland followed with a ground ball single, which scored Daniels. Crouch then singled to left, scoring Mills and Lake Linden led 11-2.

Center fielder Nevaeha Halley reached on an error, which scored Sutherland. Milkey followed with a three-run home run over the center field fence. Taylor Goldsworthy reached on an error, and Payton Goldsworthy followed with a two-run home run. The Lakes led 17-2 at that point.

Coleman got one run back in the bottom of the sixth, but could not get another one as Payton Goldsworthy picked up two straight strikeouts to end the game.

In the second game, the Lakes’ offense picked right back up where it left off.

It started in the bottom of the first inning as Milkey drew a walk to lead off. Taylor Goldsworthy did the same, as did Payton Goldsworthy to load the bases. Hampton walked, which loaded the bases again as Milkey scored. Daniels then sacrificed to score Taylor Goldsworthy. Mills walked, which loaded the bases again. Sutherland reached on an error, scoring Payton Goldsworthy and the Lakes led 3-0, but they weren’t finished.

Crouch walked, which scored Hampton. Two batters later, Milkey reached on an error, which scored Mills. Taylor Goldsworthy walked, scoring Sutherland. Payton Goldsworthy singled to left, scoring both Milkey and Crouch.

Now up 8-0, Lake Linden kept the pressure on. Hampton walked, loading the bases again. Daniels reached on an error, which scored Taylor Goldsworthy. Mills hit into a fielder’s choice to end the inning.

In the bottom of the second, the Lakes continued to find home plate. Sutherland led off with a single. Crouch then doubled to left. Griffin grounded out, but Sutherland scored on the play. Milkey and Taylor Goldsworthy both walked, loading the bases for Payton Goldsworthy. The sophomore launched a ball over the center field fence for a grand slam, putting her team up 14-0.

Things remained the same until the bottom of the fourth.

Milkey led off with a triple. She was brought home by Taylor Goldsworthy, who singled to short. Payton Goldsworthy singled, Allison Crouch walked, and two batters later, center fielder Emily Provost singled to short, scoring Payton. Two batters later, right fielder Teegan Miller walked, which scored Crouch and made it 17-0 Lake Linden.
