Michigan Tech tennis teams split weekend

Huskies women win two on the road; men drops a pair to begin GLIAC play

HOUGHTON — The Michigan Tech Huskies women’s tennis team continued its hot streak, winning its sixth and seventh straight matches over the weekend to improve to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in the GLIAC.

The Huskies won 4-3 at Purdue Northwest on Friday and 5-2 at Roosevelt on Saturday.

In the first GLIAC road match of the season, the Black and Gold took the doubles point and three singles matches. Redshirt junior Emily Cojocaru won both of her matches on the day, teaming up with junior Caoimhe McDonnell for a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles. She also won, 6-3, 6-2, in No. 3 singles.

Sophomores Alexandra Nikonenko and Efthymia Vasiliki Konstantatou took down their No. 3 doubles opponent, 6-4. Junior Bella Bigari earned a 7-5, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles, and junior Emily Rose won her sixth straight singles match, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, in the No. 4 spot.

Cojocaru continued her weekend dominance on Saturday against the Lakers. Again, partnering with McDonnell, the duo won 6-2 in No. 2 doubles. Cojocaru then won her sixth straight singles match, 6-4, 6-0, in the No. 3 position.

Bigari won both of her matches with a 6-4 win in No. 1 doubles with Rose. Bigari was victorious, 6-3, 6-4, in No. 2 singles.

Nikonenko won, 6-3, 6-1, in No. 1 singles, and sophomore Anamarija Ukic took down her No. 6 singles opponent, 6-1, 6-1.

Men’s Tennis drops a pair

The men’s tennis team opened GLIAC play this weekend with a pair of matches on the road. The Huskies fell 7-0 at Purdue Northwest on Friday and fell 4-3 at Roosevelt on Saturday.

Sophomore Sarth Bansode and junior Haitam Aboufirassi won their No. 2 doubles match against the Pride, 6-2.

Junior Ian Pinnoo pushed his No. 6 singles match to three.

On Saturday against the Lakers, the Huskies won the doubles point. Junior Landon Coates and sophomore Laurent Teysseire won 7-5 at No. 1 doubles, while Pinnoo and fifth-year Sabri Laphitz won in the No. 3 spot, 7-6 (8-6).

Coates won, 6-3, 7-6, (7-4), in the No. 2 singles to go 2-0 on the day. Freshman Andres Horobeanu won his first conference singles match in the No. 4 position, 7-5, 6-4.

Laphitz forced a third set at No. 3 singles.

Tech is 4-8 overall and 0-2 in the GLIAC and returns to action this weekend at Ferris State on Friday and Wayne State on Saturday.
