Bulldogs boys, Miners girls win regional titles in Iron River
IRON RIVER — When things finally settled Wednesday at George Young Golf Course in Iron River, the Hancock Bulldogs boys and the Negaunee Miners girls came away with regional tournament team wins.
The boys’ side came down to one stroke difference between the Bulldogs, paced by Connor Helminen, who finished tied for second with Calumet’s Robert Loukus and Houghton’s Brendan Jukuri, and the Jeffers Jets, who were paced by medalist Tage Rajala.
On the girls’ side, the competition was not as close. The Miners defeated Hancock by 39 strokes, and were paced by medalist Ady Crookham.
The Bulldogs paced the boys’ competition with a team score of 334. Helminen finished with an 80, one stroke back of medalist. Also finishing in the top 10 were Drew Sturos, who took eighth with a score of 83, and Kirby Storm, whose 85 had him in ninth. Both Nolan Hanner and Marty Pietila finished with 86, which tied for 11th.
Rajala’s 79 came from the fifth spot in the Jets’ lineup. He was joined in the top five by Carson L’Esperance, who finished with an 81. Easton Therrian finished 13th with an 87, and Max Nordstrom finished 17th with a score of 88. The Jets finished with a team score of 335.
Calumet finished third with a team score of 345. They were paced by Robert Loukus, who also had an 80. Carter Salata finished 13th with a score of 87. Ben Anderson finished 17th with a score of 88. Erik Loukus and Brendan Loukus both shot 90.
Houghton finished in fourth, one stroke behind Calumet. The Grelmins were led by Jukuri’s 80. Connor Arko shot 87, which was good for 13th. Jack Sayen shot 88, which tied him for 17th. Cam Raffaelli finished with a score of 91.
Lake Linden-Hubbell tied for fifth with a score of 351. They were paced by Brady Axford, who shot an 81, which had him in fifth. Tyler Axford shot 87, tying for 13th. Brayden Boudette shot 90, which tied for 24th.
Baraga finished 11th with a team score of 389. They were paced by Daniel Connor, who shot 89, good for 23rd.
Ontonagon finished 12th with a score of 390. They were paced by Jack Nelson, who finished 32nd with a score of 92.
Dollar Bay-Tamarack City finished 14th with a score of 398. Noah Tourtillott led the way with a 96.
On the girls’ side, the Bulldogs, who finished second with a team score of 449, were paced by Diem Kilpela, who finished fifth with a score of 101. Also finishing in the top 15 was Emery Chynoweth in 11th with a score of 114. Kaelyn Rouleau and Tally Storm tied with a score of 117 for 16th overall.
Calumet finished fourth with a team score of 465. The Copper Kings were paced by Cali Hodges, who finished second with a score of 98. Braylinn Antilla shot 119, which was good for 19th. Lucy LaCross finished 24th with a score of 123.
Houghton finished ninth with a team score of 584. They were paced by Haley Kriepke, who shot 131, which was good for 30th overall .Mia Lawson, who shot 137, finished 38th. Maddie Geborkoff shot 144. Alyssa Northey shot 172.
