Bulldogs track teams sweep their own invite

HANCOCK — Numbers became a major factor as the Hancock Bulldogs swept both ends of the Bulldog Invitational track and field title at home Saturday.

The Hancock boys scored 145 points, followed by Dollar Bay 70 and Calumet Copper Island Academy 51.

Hancock’s girls collected 174 points. They were followed by Dollar Bay 82 and Ontonagon 60.

Bulldogs’ senior Mason Wiitanen swept the boys’ weight events, taking shot put at 36 feet, one inch and discus with a season-best throw of 95-9 on this sunny and mild day.

“This is the first time we’ve held this meet on a Saturday,” Hancock coach Jennifer Smith said. “This is also the first time we’ve held the varsity and middle school meets on the same day. We had a beautiful day and had a lot of PRs (personal records). This was the last home meet for our seniors Mason Wiitanen, Louis Carlson, Eli Wanhala and Curtis Archambeau and they all did a nice job. Teammate-wise, Trent Beaudoin is the best.”

The Bulldogs, who ran uncontested in the relays, got a first from Beaudoin in the 3200-meter run in 13 minutes, 24.47 seconds.

Dollar Bay junior Baron Colbert was a four-event winner, taking the 100 (12.33), 200 (25.57) and 400 (58.88) and high jump (5-10).

Chassell sophomore Dade Holmes took the 1600 (5:26.61) and Calumet Copper Island Academy sophomore Abe Junttila won the 800 (2:19.59).

For the girls, Hancock sophomore Alena Pietila had a hand in four firsts, taking the 800 (2:41.48), 1600 (6:03.68), 3200 in a personal-best 13:28.19 and anchoring the 3200 relay.

“This was a phenomenal day for Alena and our captain Rebekah Barrette and Olivia Kangas had solid days. The rest of the kids are younger.”

The Bulldogs ran uncontested in all of the relays except the 400, which was won by Dollar Bay.

“It’s kind of scary,” Kangas said after anchoring the 800 relay. “All the eyes are on you. The downside of that is you don’t have any competition, but it’s still a motivator and counts as a win. It’s nice to have a home invitational.”

Sophomore Tatum Sporalski added a first for Hancock in shot put with a personal-best toss of 31-6.

Ontonagon senior Violet Amos, who will attend classes at Bay College this fall, was a triple-winner in the 100 (13.5), 200 (28.31) and 400 (1:07.2).

“I could have run better,” Amos said after the 800. “She (Dollar Bay sophomore Emma Myllyoja) is a decent runner. It’s a good meet. There’s not many teams here, but it’s fun. We’ve lost a couple meets due to the weather. It’s nice to be able to fill a gap in our schedule.”

Dollar Bay junior Laila Bell won long jump (15-7½) and pole vault (7-6) and placed second in the 100 (14.08) and 800 (3:00.81).

“This is definitely not what I was expecting (in the 800),” she said. “I need to work on pacing. In the last meet I was not very good in long jump. I just needed to fix some things. Although, I got PR in the 100. I’m happy about that.”

Chassell sophomore Jordan Holombo took the 100 hurdles (17.69) and 300s (49.31).

“It’s awesome having another opportunity to compete,” Chassell coach Casana Ryynanen said. “We had one girl run the 100 hurdles for the first time and had another doing the 1600. The kids are doing an awesome job.”
