Copper Kings softball sweeps Red Devils on the road

CALUMET — The Calumet Copper Kings softball team is starting to figure things out. Thursday, they hosted Ironwood and swept the Red Devils in a doubleheader, 13-6 and 16-0.

In the opening game, left fielder Bethany Garrow went 3-for-4 in the leadoff spot, scoring three runs and knocking one in. First baseman Chloe Coppo and centerfielder Jailyn Poshak both had two hits each.

Garrow had a single, a double, and a home run in the game. Coppo also hit a home run.

Shortstop Molly Erkkila and Coppo also scored three runs each. Poshak scored twice. Coppo paced all Calumet hitters with three RBI.

Pitcher Danni Stites struck out 15, walked six, and surrendered six hits in seven innings to earn the win.

The Copper Kings jumped out to a 6-2 win after the first inning. After two, they found themselves in a 8-6 game, before scoring the game’s last five runs to close out the win.

In the nightcap. Poshak got the start, going three innings. She struck out three, walked two, and gave up just one hit.

At the plate, Erkkila was excellent, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI.

Coppo had two RBI after going 2-for-4. Left fielder Cara Halonen knocked in a pair of runs and scored twice, while drawing two walks.

Garrow went just 1-for-2, but she drew two walks, scored twice, and had one RBI in the game.

The Copper Kings will be back in action Monday when they are scheduled to host Houghton at 4 p.m.
