HANCOCK — The Hancock Bulldogs softball team stayed on the winning track Friday with a doubleheader sweep of the Westwood Patriots. They won the opener, 2-1, and took the second game in five innings, 12-1.

The first game of the twin bill was a come-from-behind victory that was won with a walk-off base hit by Kaelyn Rouleau.

Westwood led the game for the first five innings with a wild pitch from Hancock’s Lucy Biekkola having led to a Patriots run in the second.

Biekkola then made up for the run in the fifth courtesy of a single. The game stayed a 1-1 knot through six.

After the Bulldogs put down the Patriots in the top of the seventh, they played some small ball to earn the win. It started with Briell L’Esperance striking a double to left center. Alice Larson’s sacrifice bunt moved her to third. Rouleau then slapped a 1-2 riser through the left side, and L’Esperance came home with ease for the 2-1 win.

Lucy Biekkola earned the complete-game win from the circle. She allowed five hits and just one run in seven innings. She struck out nine and walked just two.

“Pitching and defense were good in both games” stated Bulldogs coach Craig Biekkola. “The difference was that we struggled to get base runners on in that first game.”

Baserunners were not an issue in the second game. A three-run first inning led to a one-run second and an eight-run fourth.

“We hit the ball better in the second,” noted Coach Biekkola.

Emery Chynoweth led the Bulldogs with three RBIs. Larson had the hot bat as she went 2-for-4. L’Esperance had three of the Bulldogs seven walks in this one.

Their aggressive base running led to five stolen bases, and the Bulldogs played error-free ball.

Lucy Biekkola stayed in the circle for the Bulldogs. She again went the distance, surrendering four hits and one run in five innings. Along the way she struck out five patriots and walked just two.
