Jets softball sweeps Copper Island Academy
SOUTH RANGE — The Jeffers Jets softball team wanted to get in a last tuneup before their district tournament Thursday. They took on the Copper Island Academy Eagles, sweeping them, 17-2 and 21-6, at home at the South Range VFW Field.
In the opener, shortstop Meg Ruohonen drove the Jets’ offense, racking up five RBI in the leadoff spot in the lineup. She went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, one walk and two runs scored as well.
In the nightcap, she went 2-for-2 with a walk, three runs scored and an RBI batting seventh in the lineup. She also played center field.
The Jets scored six times in the first inning, eight times in the second, and three times in the third to seal the win.
Centerfielder Kylee Andrews went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and four batted in. Left fielder Addi Randell also had multiple hits, going 2-for-2 with an RBI.
The Jets got through the entire lineup in the first inning scoring five times before Ruohonen got back to the plate, drawing a walk, which scored Pearl Raffaelli in the process.
In the second inning, Raffaelli singled to left, scoring Andrews and catcher Naomi Frahm in the process. Savannah Hendrickson then singled to bring Raffaelli home and give the Jets a 9-0 lead.
Two batters later, Ruohonen drilled a ball over the center field fence, scoring Hendrickson and Lilah Hill in the process. Four batters after that, Andrews singled to center, scoring KayDee Archambeau and first baseman Svea Johnson. Jeffers led 14-0 at that point.
Copper Island Academy got on the board in the top of the third inning when pitcher Mollie Pennala was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring first baseman Janel Kangas. Then left fielder Ellie Lasanen walked, which scored catcher Julie Berg.
The Jets answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Ruohonen tripled to bring Hill home. Three batters later, Frahm singled to left, scoring Ruohonen and third baseman Janet Mattila.
Mattila got the start in the circle for the Jets, pitching two innings. She struck out five and surrendered one hit. Elli Kuntze threw one inning in relief, walking three and giving up one hit.
Pennala made the start for the Eagles, going 2 2/3 innings, striking out three, walking eight, and surrendering 11 hits.
In the second game, Hendrickson led all hitters, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI. Pitcher Evelyn Sturos went 2-for-3 with one walk, three runs, and three RBI.
Frahm and Johnson also had a pair of hits each, with Frahm going 2-for-3 with three runs scored, and two RBI. Johnson went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, one walk, and two RBI.
The Jets scored 10 runs in the first, four in the second, two in the third, and five in the fourth to seal the win.
The Eagles scored a run in the second, two in the third, and three in the fourth. They did that on the strength of four hits and four walks.
Berg, who got the start in the circle, scored two runs for the Eagles, and drew a walk. Catcher Vera Lasanen, Ellie Lasanen, Pennala, and right fielder Adalie Heinonen also scored in the game.
Sturos went four innings in the circle for the Jets. She struck out three, walked four, and surrendered four hits.
Berg went 3 2/3 innings for Copper Island Academy. She walked six and gave up 15 hits.
