Lakes softball closes out regular season with sweep
ISHPEMING — With a pair of lopsided wins Tuesday, the Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes softball team closed out the regular season with a sweep of the Westwood Patriots on the road. The Lakes won the opening game, 16-0, then the nightcap, 18-2.
With the wins, the Lakes closed out the regular season 27-2.
In the opener, pitcher Payton Goldsworthy was outstanding. She struck out 11 and surrendered only two hits over five innings of work.
At the plate, she was even better. One of three Lakes’ hitters with three hits, Goldsworthy went 3-for-4 with a walk, four runs scored and four runs batted in. She racked up a pair of home runs, and her other hit was a double.
Catcher Taylor Goldsworthy and second baseman Ella Schneiderhan both went 3-for-4 as well. Goldsworthy scored twice and knocked in two runs. Schneiderhan scored once and knocked in a pair.
The Lakes scored four times in the opening inning. Centerfielder Ashlyn Steves got things rolling with a leadoff walk. Payton Goldsworthy doubled, scoring Steves. Third baseman Cleo Milkey doubled to left, scoring Goldsworthy.
Later, shortstop Sophia Hampton doubled to center field, putting runners on the corners as Scheiderhan stepped to the plate. She singled to center, scoring both Milkey and Hampton.
In the second inning, Steves got on base with a one-out double to center field. Payton Goldsworthy then hit a two-run home run to left field, and the Lakes led 6-0.
Payton Goldsworthy hit her second home run to lead off the fourth when she launched one to center field. Milkey followed with a double to center. Taylor Goldsworthy brought her home with a double to center.
Two batters later, Hampton grounded out, but not before Taylor Goldsworthy scored. It was 9-0 Lakes at that point.
The Lakes added seven more runs in the top of the fifth to put the game out of reach.
Right fielder Lissa Johnson singled to lead off. Two batters later, Steves drew a walk. Payton Goldsworthy was intentionally walked, loading the bases. Two batters after that, Taylor Goldsworthy singled to left, scoring Johnson.
First baseman Jovie Daniels then singled to short, scoring Payton Goldsworthy. Hampton then singled, scoring Taylor Goldsworthy and Daniels. Schneiderhan doubled to center field. Johnson then tripled to right, scoring both Hampton and Scheiderhan.
In the nightcap, Steves got the start in the circle, going four innings. She struck out three and surrendered five hits.
Payton Goldsworthy hit another home run as part of a 2-for-2 game where she scored four times, knocked in four, and walked twice.
The Lakes opened the game with four runs in the first. Steves started things with a leadoff walk. Payton Goldsworthy doubled to center field, scoring Steves. Two batters later, Taylor Goldsworthy was hit by a pitch. Daniels walked. Hampton doubled to left, scoring both Goldworthys in the process. Megan Sutherland sacrificed to score Daniels.
In the second, Steves led off with a single to center field. Payton Goldsworthy walked. Milkey grounded out, but Steves scored. Taylor Goldsworthy singled to center, scoring Payton. Daniels doubled to right field, scoring Taylor.
Lake Linden led 7-0 at that point.
In the third, the Lakes added four more runs. Right fielder Hailey Crouch led off with a single. Steves tripled to left, scoring Crouch. Nevaeha Halley came in to run for Steves, and Payton Goldsworthy walked, putting runners on the corners. Milkey singled, scoring Halley.
Three batters later, Hampton singled to center, scoring Payton Goldsworthy and Milkey.
The Lakes added seven more runs in the fourth to push their lead to 18-0.
Right fielder Abril Bernet singled to lead off. Steves singled to center field. Payton Goldsworthy hit a three-run home run to center. Two batters later Taylor Goldsworthy doubled. Daniels walked.
Hampton singled, and Taylor scored on the play. Sutherland doubled to center, scoring Daniels and Hampton. Johnson then sacrificed to score Sutherland.
The Patriots scored their only two runs of the day in the bottom half of the inning.
