Lakes softball continues to roll with victory over L’Anse

LAKE LINDEN — Pitcher Payton Goldsworthy threw a no-hitter, struck out 14 L’Anse Purple Hornets batters, and came up with a double and a home run, as the Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes earned their 18th straight win to start the season, 13-1, at the Boneyard.

Goldsworthy went 2-for-2 at the plate, racking up three runs scored and two RBI.

The Purple Hornets actually led the game after the top of the first inning. With two outs, Sylvia Allen reached on an error. Lola Cichosz then reached on an error as well, and the play continued with Cichosz getting to third. Allen scored as well.

The game remained 1-0 for L’Anse until the bottom of the second.

Payton Goldsworthy doubled to lead off the inning. She scored on a passed ball with second baseman Kyara Mills at the plate. Mills then drew a walk. First baseman Jovie Daniels walked. Shortstop Sophia Hampton was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Left fielder Megan Sutherland grounded out, but Mills scored on the play. Lake Linden led 2-1 at that point.

In the third, the Lakes added to their lead. Third baseman Cleo Milkey led off with a single to center field. Two batters later, Payton Goldsworthy was hit by a pitch. Mills singled to center to load the bases. Daniels was then hit by a pitch, forcing Milkey across home plate. Hampton was hit by a pitch after Goldsworthy scored on a wild pitch, loading the bases again. Mills scored on a wild pitch. Right fielder Navaeha Halley was hit by a pitch to load the bases again.

Daniels scored on a passed ball, and Hampton scored on a wild pitch, before centerfielder Ashlyn Steves singled to left field, scoring Halley. The Lakes led at that point, 8-1.

After holding the Purple Hornets off the board again in the top of the fourth, the Lakes added five more runs.

Catcher Taylor Goldsworthy got things started with a single to center field. Payton Goldsworthy then hit a two-run home run to center. Mills drew a walk. Two batters later, Hampton reached on an error. Sutherland then doubled to right field, scoring Mills and Hampton.

Right fielder Lissa Johnson singled to left field. Steves then singled, scoring Sutherland, putting the Lakes ahead by 12.

Kenzie Bianco got the start for L’Anse, going 2 2/3 innings. She struck out two, walked two, and gave up four hits. Kwynn Voskuhl went 1 1/3 in relief. She walked one and surrendered six hits.
