Lakes softball rolls to sweep of Vikings

BARAGA — Pitcher Payton Goldsworthy had another strong showing Friday as the Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes had another strong showing, this time against the Baraga Vikings, whom the Lakes defeated 19-0 and 16-3.
Lake Linden improved to 17-0 with the wins.
In the opener, Goldsworthy struck out 11, walked none, and gave up just one hit to earn a win. At the plate, she went 5-for-5, with six RBI, five runs scored, and she hit for the cycle, getting two singles, a double, a triple, and a home run. She touched 11 bases total in the game.
In the nightcap, she followed with a 3-for-3 run at the plate, three RBI, and four runs scored. She had three doubles in the contest.
The Lakes, as a team, put the first game out of reach immediately with six runs in the top of the first inning. It started with a leadoff walk by centerfielder Ashlyn Steves. Third baseman Cleo Milkey then singled to right field. Catcher Taylor Goldsworthy doubled to left. She scored Steves and Milkey on the play.
Payton Goldsworthy then doubled to right field to bring Taylor home. Second baseman Kyara Mills singled to center, scoring Payton. Sophia Hampton then walked. Two batters later, first baseman Jovie Daniels singled to short. Mills scored on the play.
Right fielder Naeveha Halley singled to second base. Steves singled to right field, scoring Daniels.
In the second innings, Payton Goldsworthy got things started with a one-out single to short. Mills singled to center. Hampton then grounded out, but not before Goldsworthy scored. Left fielder Megan Sutherland then singled to center, scoring Mills. Lake Linden led 8-0 at that point.
In the top of the third, the Lakes added three more runs. It started with a single to center by Steves to lead off. Ella Schneiderhan singled to right. Two batters later, Payton Goldsworthy singled to left, scoring Steves. After Mills flew out, Hampton singled to right field, scoring Schneiderhan and Goldsworthy.
The Lakes added three more runs in the fourth. Steves drew a one-out walk. Two batters later, Taylor Goldsworthy singled to left field, scoring Steves. Then Payton Goldsworthy tripled to center, scoring Taylor. Mills then doubled to right field, and Payton scored on the play.
In the fifth, the Lakes tacked on five more runs to close out the contest.
Sutherland doubled to lead off. First baseman Hailey Crouch singled to right field, which scored Sutherland. Halley was hit by a pitch. Three batters later, Taylor Goldsworthy doubled to right field, scoring Halley. Payton Goldsworthy then hit a three-run home run over the center field fence, which made the score 19-0 at that point, which is where the score remained.
Danica Jahfetson threw five innings for the Vikings in the loss. She struck out two and walked three.
In the nightcap, the Lakes were the home team. They jumped all over the Vikings right away in the bottom half of the first inning.
Steves drew a leadoff walk. Milkey singled to second. Taylor Goldsworthy then singled to right field, scoring Steves. Payton Goldsworthy followed with a double, scoring Milkey. Mills singled to left, scoring both Goldsworthy sisters.
Hampton singled to center. Two batters later, Mills stole home with Lissa Johnson at the plate.
Baraga answered back in the top of the second. Ari Jahfetson got things started with a solo home run to right field to lead off. Aybri Sorenson walked. Rylin Lamson singled. Nizhoni Jacker then grounded out, but not before Sorenson scored.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Lakes bounced back with four more runs. Steves led off with a single to left field. Two batters later, Taylor Goldsworthy singled to center, scoring Steves. Payton Goldsworthy walked. Mills walked after Taylor scored on a passed ball. Hampton grounded out, but Payton scored on the play. Sutherland walked. Mills then scored on a double to center by Daniels.
The Vikings got one run back in the top of the third. Danica Jahfetson reached on an error. Josie Merver walked. Then Ari Jahfeston singled to right field, scoring Danica in the process.
The Lakes scored four more runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Milkey led off with a single to short. Taylor Goldsworthy walked. Payton Goldsworthy then doubled to left, scoring Taylor. Mills singled to left, scoring Payton on the first pitch she saw.
Hampton reached on a bunt. Sutherland grounded out, but Mills still scored. Daniels singled to short, scoring Hampton to make it 13-3.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Lakes added three more runs. It started with a Milkey singled to center field.Taylor Goldsworthy walked. Payton Goldsworthy doubled to center to score Milkey. Taylor scored on a passed ball. Mills grounded out back to the pitcher, but the play ended in a run for Lake Linden as Mills grounded out to the pitcher, and Payton scored.
Neither team found another run.
Steves threw five innings, striking out six, walking three, and surrendering three hits to earn the win. Izzy Jahfetson went four innings, striking out two and walking six.
