Local basketball players to take part in Border Bash

IRONWOOD — Multiple local players are a part of Northern Michigan’s star-studded boys and girls rosters set to take the court at this year’s Kiwanis Classic Border Bash.

Ironwood’s Jaelyn Novascone and Ewen-Trout Creek’s Emma Besonen and Irelynd McGeshick make up a third of the Michigan girls roster with the Red Devils’ Nick Miskovich on the boys team.

The game is set for Thursday, June 4, at the Lindquist Center in Ironwood. The girls game begins at 5 p.m. with the boys to follow.

Besonen was named to the All-U.P. First Team the last four seasons and is going to play basketball at UW-Superior in the fall. Novascone, Miskovich and McGeshick were Second Team selections in their division last year. All four of them cleared the 1,000 career point mark with Miskovich second on the Ironwood boys’ all-time scoring list.

Three of the four U.P. players of the year will be here — Westwood’s Ethan Marta (Mr. Basketball, D 1-3 Player of the Year), Dollar Bay’s Liam Tourtillott (boys D-4) and Ishpeming’s Jenessa Eagle (girls D-4).

Marta and Eagle are headed to Michigan Tech to play basketball.

Other notable players include All-U.P. Dream Team selection Tanner Theuerkauf of Menominee, which ended its season at the Breslin Center; All-State First Team choice Lauren Adams and Baraga’s Kara Roberts, an All-U.P. First Team selection.

Ishpeming’s Mya Hemmer, another Dream Team player, can’t play because she will be at Baylor, where she’s going to play volleyball. Miss Basketball, Lillie Johnson of Gladstone, will be at UW-Green Bay, where she’s headed for basketball.

The Wisconsin rosters are talented but less known to area fans. There are no local players and there’s only one Northern Lights Conference player, Mellen’s Xander Beeksma on the boys team.

Three of the nine Wisconsin boys were named Player of the Year in their conference this season — Rhinelander’s Devon Feck and Northland Pines’ Mylo Albrecht in the Great Northern and Flambeau’s Dominic Kopacz in the Lakeland East.

Two girls players were named Division 5 All-State by the coaches — Wisconsin Rapids Assumption’s Jordan Jaglinski and Stevens Point Pacelli’s Ella Van Order. Jaglinski was the Player of the Year in the Marawood South. Van Order scored 25 points in Pacelli’s 70-40 win over Eleva-Strum in last month’s state championship game. Fall Creek’s Jasmin Heuer is headed to Michigan Tech for basketball.

Northern Wisconsin leads the Border Bash boys series 7-4 with the Northern Michigan girls just ahead at 6-5.

Proceeds from the Border Bash have benefited the Gogebic Community College basketball program.
