GWINN — Youth was served Thursday as underclassmen had a chance to shine in the Division 2 regional track and field meet.
Sophomore Bristol Shamion won four events on this sunny and mild afternoon, helping the West Iron County girls retain their title with 55½ points.
“This is a great win for sure (for both teams),” West Iron coach Kristi Berutti said. “We had so many PRs (personal records), it was crazy.”
Ewen-Trout Creek, led by sophomore Bree Besonen, placed second in its D-2 debut with 46½ points and Hancock placed third at 33.
The West Iron boys also won with 58 points, followed by Gwinn 54, Ironwood 32 and Hancock 25.
Besonen won the girls’ 800-meter run in 2:36.88 and 3200 (13:25.12) and was runner-up to Hancock sophomore Alena Pietila in the 1600.
“I knew she was going to be there, and she was going to hunt you down,” Besonen said. “Overall, I’m happy with my times. Four miles of running makes for a long day, but it’s also rewarding. It makes you feel good about yourself. We do a good mix of training. We work on our speed and endurance. My goal in the 3200 right now is to go under 13.”
The top two finishers in the 1600 ran personal-best times with Pietila clocked at 5:44.31 and Besonen completing the four laps in 5:45.76.
“The 800 is usually my strongest race, but today the 1600 was my best,” Pietila said. “In the 1600, I ran a steady pace and had a lot left in the end. I only ran one year of cross country. I play volleyball and do other sports. I need to work on maintaining my speed from mid-race to finish.”
Shamion captured high jump with a personal-best leap of 5-2 and added a PB while taking the 300 hurdles (48.52). She also took the 100 hurdles (17.83) and 200 (29.1).
“In the last meet I was close to getting that (5-2),” she said. “Today I was dialed in. This was kind of a confidence builder. It’s really nice out here today. This is about the same as it was in Florence (Wis. on April 16). Otherwise, we’ve had to bundle up for other meets.”
Senior Lacey Shamion helped the Wykons win three relays and placed third in long jump (14-4).
E-TC seniors Irelynd McGeshick and Emma Besonen placed 1-2 in discus with tosses of 94-4 (PB) and 92-5, respectively.
“We knew we had a chance when we mapped things out,” E-TC coach Brad Besonen said. “The girls ran hard and did better than we thought we could. I’m extremely happy with the effort. We hadn’t had a meet in 10 days. Maybe that made them hungry. The boys also gave a solid effort. I’m happy our 4×800 qualified for the U.P. Finals.”
Hancock also got a first on sophomore Tatum Sporalski’s personal-best toss of 33-6 in shot put and junior Brielle Anderson provided Jeffers with a first in long jump (14-10).
“Our kids did amazing,” Hancock coach Jennifer Smith said. “They came here with a great attitude and got a lot of PRs. We also had great participation. Alena and (freshman) Adelyn Pietila ran nearly four miles and Tatum got a nice win in shot. We’re also happy for Jason Parmelee, who placed third in the boys’ 3200 with a personal-best time (13:09.03).
Senior Todd Kilpela placed second for Hancock with PBs in the 800 (2:20.56) and 1600 (5:17.81) and freshman Liam Kinnunen provided a second for Jeffers in the 3200 in a personal-best 12:06.59
Senior Talon Hughes was a triple-winner for Ironwood, taking the 110 hurdles (16.83) and the 100 (11.63) and 200 (24.09)
West Iron also had a triple-winner in freshman Eduel Spencer, who copped the 800 (2:16.19), 1600 (5:07.8) and 3200 (12:01.71).
Wykons’ sophomore Alex Ghigga uncorked winning tosses in shot (47-1½) and disc (123-8), which was a PB, and classmate Seth Oberlin won high jump (6-0) and the 400 (55.05) and anchored the winning 1600 relay (3:59.33).
The top four finishers in each event qualified for the Upper Peninsula Finals May 30 at Kingsford.
