HURONTOWN — It was the tale of two games for the Backcountry Village in Portage Lake Little League Majors softball action Tuesday. The girls in green had a slow start in their opening contest against Superior Service Towing losing, 5-1. However, their bats came alive in their second game against Moyle Construction as they won that one, 8-6.

In the first game, Backcountry and Superior both posted runs in the first inning. However, that is all Backcountry scored, and Superior went on to tally four more runs over the remainder of the contest.

According to Superior Service’s coach Greg Seppanen, Tuesday’s win was a complete-game by his squad.

“The girls played outstanding defense, and we had great pitching,” he stated.

Hadley Koski and Delanie Seppanen were in the circle for Superior. The girls in maroon kept Backcountry off the bases in the final three innings as their teammates made the plays in the field. Pitching accounted for just three strikeouts over six innings.

Meanwhile Superior kept scoring. In the second inning, a walk to Delanie Seppanen led to a run. In the same fashion walks to Ellie Witt and Maya Miller in the third led to runs three and four. The final run was scored in the fourth by Elise Primeau.

BACKCOUNTRY VILLAGE 8, MOYLE CONSTRUCTION 6

Backcountry Village’s second game against Moyle Construction had a similar start but a better finish. After being knotted at one after the first inning, Backcountry went on to outscore Moyle 7-5 for an 8-6 win.

According to Backcountry’s coach Phil Pietila, the key to victory was hot bats.

“Our bats came alive,” he stated. “We hit the ball much better this game.”

That included two runs in the second and another two in the third. Scoring in the second inning were Angie Datto and Chloe Gasperich. In the third inning, crossing home plate were Allie Mettlach and Ivy Markham.

While Backcountry now led 5-1, it was short lived. Moyle rallied for four runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game at five. Scoring that frame for Moyle were Violet Kilpela, Miina Heinonen and Mckinley Soli. All three reached on walks. Sophia Keteri rounded out the inning with a base hit and a run.

Neither team scored in the fourth, but Backcountry put the game away with two runs in the fifth and another run in the sixth. Singles by Avery Pietila and Lucia Peterson were runs six and seven.

While both teams scored runs in the sixth inning, Backcountry stayed two runs ahead for the 8-6 victory.
