LAKE LINDEN — While both Gold Standard and Northern Wishes were able to put the ball into play on Monday at the Boneyard in Copper Country Women’s Fastpitch play, Gold Standard did it a little bit better on their home field.

A seven-run fifth inning for them led to an 11-2 win over Northern Wishes.

It was a complete-game victory, according to Gold Standard coach Curt Kinnunen.

“Pitching was good, and we hit the ball well,” he said.

While Gold Standard ended the game on top, Northern Wishes had a brief 1-0 lead after two innings. That first run of the game was scored by Janet Mattila. She led the second frame off with a walk, and was brought home on a Meg Ruohonen base hit.

The 1-0 lead, however, was short-lived as Gold Standard posted two runs in the top of the third. With two outs in that frame, pitcher Emily Jokela slapped a triple to deep left. She scored on an Olivia Shank home run to right field.

An inning later, Gold Standard’s Taylor Goldsworthy made it 3-1 after connecting for a double deep to left-center field.

Then came the fifth inning, where Gold Standard went through the lineup and posted seven runs off of Northern Wishes pitcher Rosalie Kangas. It started with back-to-back walks to Naevia Daniels and Lissa Johnson. They crossed home on a Jokela double.

She later scored on a Taylor Goldsworthy double. A Jovie Daniels single led to another run. A double to right field by Maria Chizek was the final tally of the inning.

While Northern Wishes added another run in the fifth, they could not catch their opponent.

Jokela and Payton Goldsworthy combined for the win in the circle for Gold Standard. The hard-throwing right handers combined for an impressive 15 strikeouts. The final strikeout was handed to Ruohonen, who was caught looking at strike three, which ended the game.

“They have good pitching, and we need to hit the ball better,” said Northern Wishes player-coach Kim Aho.
