Lakes boys crowned UP track champions
KINGSFORD — The Lake Linden-Hubbell boys’ track and field team made some program history Saturday, earning its first Upper Peninsula Division 3 title with 64 points.
The Lakes were followed by Rapid River 55 and St. Ignace 46 on this sunny and warm day at Flivver Field.
“We’ve been waiting for this for four months,” Lakes coach Brett Gervais said. “Back in March we started asking a lot of the boys. I couldn’t be happier for the kids. I’m super happy for the boys. Having coach (Gary) Guisfredi) here really helps. He has coached the girls’ team for many years. I’ve watched the way they did things and learned a lot from that.”
Lakes junior Lukas Axford won the 400-meter dash in a personal-best 53.48 seconds and sophomore Tom Baril added a first in pole vault with a leap of 11 feet.
“I was almost in disbelief with all the work the boys had done,” Gervais said. “The weather sometimes made it tough to prepare. There’s roughly 30 teams in our division. They’re working just as hard as we are. There’s a high level of competition in our region which helps us so much. Dollar Bay and Baraga pushed us all year. It’s such a great feeling to be part of this.”
Baraga senior Matt Rinkinen won the 100 in 11.66, edging Lakes junior Josh Daavettila by .02 second.
Rinkinen placed second in the 200 (23.71) and Dollar Bay-Tamarack City junior Baron Colbert took third (23.96).
L’Anse junior Connor Kemppainen was runner-up in the 100 hurdles (16.43) and the 300s in a personal-best 42.68 and classmate Taven Lewis was second in shot put (41-9) and discus (137-9).
Marquette was crowned D1 champion for the sixth straight year with 117 points, followed by Sault Ste. Marie 103 and Houghton 78.
Houghton junior Sam Roth captured the 100 in 11.1 seconds and the 200 in a school-record 22.53 and classmate Michael Solena took shot (50-1¼) and disc (139-9).
“I’m just excited because the work I put in has paid off,” Roth said. “Brayden Goudge is really good. Having someone who’s competitive to run with in practice helps a lot. My start in the 100 was pretty bad, but I caught up. I’m just glad I could get it done. I just hope there’s good competition next year because that pushes you a lot. I’m just happy everything worked out.”
Roth and Goudge helped the Gremlins take second in the 400 relay at 44.48.
Freshman Eli Garnell helped Houghton take runner-up in the 3200 relay, then placed third in the open 800 (2:04.89).
In D2, Pickford was crowned champion for the fourth consecutive time with 139 points. The Panthers, who also won D3 in 2022, were followed by Rudyard 104 and Bark River-Harris 77 this time.
