Lakes softball dominates district team

HANCOCK — The Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes softball team had a dominant season, going 28-2. With contributions coming from all over the lineup, it was no surprise Thursday that six members of the team, along with coach Curtis Kinnunen, were all honored as part of the District 97 All-District Team.
Kinnunen was named Coach of the Year for leading the Lakes to the dominant record.
“We had an incredible year,” he said. “We were, I can’t remember what it was, 20-0, something (like that), and then went to Crivitz, and we split with them to get our first loss.
“These girls played hard all year long. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
At pitcher, sophomore Payton Goldsworthy was chosen. The Lakes’ star pitched 120 2/3 innings, starting 19 games. She went 18-1. She struck out 255, and had an earned run average of 2.03.
At catcher, eighth grader Taylor Goldsworthy hit .454 with an OBP of .578. She had 44 hits, 30 of which were singles. She had six doubles, five triples, and three home runs. She knocked in 37 runs as well.
At first base, Jovie Daniels had 80 at bats, hitting .300. She had 24 hits, 15 of which were singles. She also had nine doubles. She knocked in 14 runs and drew 18 walks.
In the outfield, centerfielder Ashlyn Steves was the Lakes’ second-best hitter. She hit .538 in 80 at bats. She had on-base percentage of .664 with 43 hits, six doubles, three triples and two home runs. She knocked in 21 runs from the leadoff spot in the Lakes’ lineup, and she drew 32 walks.
In a utility role, Kyara Mills was outstanding. She hit .349 in 84 at bats with 30 hits, 23 of which were singles, along with seven doubles. She knocked in 39 runs in the process.
Shortstop Sophia Hampton was one of three players to earn an at-large spot on the team. In 86 at bats, she hit .407 with 35 hits. She had four doubles and knocked in 28 runs. She was also issued 15 walks.
The Hancock Bulldogs, who won the District 97 tournament, was given the Team Sportsmanship Award after going 17-8-1 during the season.
Junior pitcher Lucy Biekkola was named to the team. She threw 142 2/3 innings, starting 23 games. She finished with a record of 16-5. She struck out 186 and had an ERA of 3.091.
Senior Emery Chynoweth was named to the team at third base. The Bulldogs’ best hitter hit .391 in 69 at bats. She had 27 hits, 20 of which were singles. She also had five doubles and two triples. She knocked in 21 runs and walked 15 times.
Tally Storm was named to the team in the outfield, joining Steves. As a first-year starter, Storm hit .271 in 59 at bats. She had 16 hits, all singles. She knocked in nine runs, scored 15 times, and walked 18 times.
Also named to the team were Gogebic second baseman Noelle Grace, shortstop Emily DelFavero, outfielder Carine Cole, designated player Kenly Anderson, and at-large players Olivia Peterson and Emma Choronzy.
